Like felling, cutting, splitting easy splitting wood, stacking. Dislike brush clean up, splitting knotty or twisty wood, loading and unloading. Of course like the fire, but not too thrilled with the clean up.
Likes All the wood I acquire is free from the job sites, most of it is stuff people in my area never come across. I have a splitter and a new wheelbarrow, those things make the work very easy. My natural gas bill is 22 dollars a month due to heating with wood. I feel like I'm providing for myself instead of relying on someone else. Dislikes I really don't have enough room/space for my stacks. Sometimes I don't get the fire quite so and it doesn't burn through the night properly.
Love cutting. Splitting can be fun for a while but eventually gets old. Dislike loading my dump truck. Really like dumping in customers driveway and getting paid. Hate mechanical breakdowns
Great thread! Likes: cutting, splitting, and I really don't mind stacking. I like the work out, and the satisfaction of being self-sufficient when it comes to staying warm. Dislikes: loading, unloading, and dealing with limb wood. I also dislike finding that hidden rock or whatever that dulls a new chain.
Like: felling, bucking, splitting. Dislike: stacking, moving wood around. Hate: cleaning up the mess afterwards (the wife likes the branches all cleaned up and chipped.) Love: fire in the winter, for less than "normal" heat. It all works out to a pretty good deal overall.
I like running saws I like splitting long as it's stuff that's easy to split. Don't mind the stacking part since kids help me out also like the being self realiaent and having alot warmer heat the bad I get aggravated cause I get wore out so easy anymore do to my pd and it takes me forever to get anything done also can't lift big heavy rounds anymore below 24 inchs is about perfect
My likes in order... Seeing my dog curled up next to a cozy fire on a cold day Felling, bucking wood - especially if doing it with a friend who also gets excited about cutting firewood (not many of them do). Splitting (with a hydraulic splitter) Splitting (the old fashioned way) Stacking Least favorite... bringing wood from the piles into the house especially when its raining and dreary (which is common in western Oregon)
Great way to put it yooperdave ! I’m with ya 100%. Not being able to do it like I used to is what I like the least.
I like most all aspects of getting it done...brush is probably the least liked, especially when my helper can't keep up with me and the saw......
I like having heat, particularly when we lose power.. More than once friends camped out in stove room when power was out!
I like when new people come to the house and ask me if we burn wood. My response is usually : "why do you ask?"
Great thread! I like it all. Wish I was 30 years younger so I could process wood for that much longer.
My favorite is any time I am running one of my saws. The second thing is looking at all my stacks. The third is watching a fire in the stove on a cold evening. Those 3 things make all the rest of the wood processing worth while.
I am truly blessed! I like all parts of the process from felling to bucking, hauling, splitting, stacking and then enjoying that wonderful heat it gives. Of course the savings of dollars has to be loved too. Like yooperdave there is one part that I do not enjoy and that is the pain involved that I have to put up with. I try to work around it as much as possible and even will take medicine to lessen the pain. I also tend to use a lot of heat especially on my back. It is common for me to use one of the back wraps that ThermaCare has out as they give good heat and it can last all day. It helps a lot. I also have heated handlebar grips on the atv. For the hands I like to use soapstone blocks inside the gloves to keep them warm so that as my hands get cold, I'll switch gloves. Putting on a warm pair can be Heavenly. Then there is that time when the work is done and you come indoors. When the door is opened and you enter, the feel of that wonderful wood heat is like nothing else. It does tend to make you sleepy after working in the cold but it is sweet! If working when it is warmer, then a cold beer tastes great too!
My likes are (least to most favorite): 1) Moving the splits from the initial stack to the wood shed 2) initial stacking 3) loading and unloading the trailer 4) bucking and quartering 5) splitting with the splitter 6) viewing my full wood shed and basking in the feeling of self sufficiency and preparedness 7) sinking into my warm leather recliner with a tumbler of Irish whiskey. The lights are out. The stove is glowing with warmth and flickering light. My Wife is snuggled nearby in her favorite chair. We are safe, dry and warm and truly blessed. Outside in the dark the wind is blowing and it is raining and sleeting. The Wolf scratches briefly at the door then leaves. He is no match for Love, Warmth and Grateful Hearts! Amen!
I don’t think this has been mentioned yet - but come April or early May, I hate it when a split falls off my wheelbarrow in front of the wheel and I hit it for about the 50th time that winter. I’ve just about had enough of handling wood at that point anyway - the split in front of the wheelbarrow is like adding insult to injury.
