In one of the more conversations the wife and I had about my wood quantity, I said "hey, it has to last 20 years cuz then I'll be to old to scrounge." She says that the wood will rot by then. It's stacked up off the ground...so who's right?

Never too old to scrounge. My dad did it up till his 90's. And never will have enough wood (even in Arizona). Keep hoarding:yes:

How old is your house? I'll guess it's made of wood . Get your cover system together, your firewood should last longer than yourself.

I'd say in cases where folks have wood sheds, wood could last a lot longer than if the wood remained in stacks or piles. But, like anything made of wood, it's self preserving qualities will only take it so far being out in the weather for for a long period of time.

Doesn't firewood break down from UV in Arizona long before it rots?

What about old log cabins. Kept dry you rarely find any rot may be a little spongy here and there. In laws house is from late 1800s and still solid.

That's because they're in log form. Everybody knows wood doesn't dry until it's c/s/s.:p

If air can get around it and it's not laying on the direct ground, many, many years. Bug's will get to it first. I have had some wood that was given to me and it was 7 years old and I burn't it just fine.
As Mr. A said, how old is some houses. "my opinion" I think it would be safe to say 10 years easy as long as it's kept properly.

But I have to agree with the peanut gallery, your "NEVER TO OLD TO SCROUNGE"!

Have maple stacked in my basement from the mid 1970's/

    Unfortunately only a little left.

It is great to burn....admittedly, has been in the basement, protected from the weather all that time.

Wet to dry, wet to dry, wet to dry = long time, but not as long as below.
Dry, dry, dry= very, very long time.
