Ugh. I plumbed in one of those HD canister water filter units a few years ago and it's been "ok".
It's becoming problematic, tough to swap and seal. So what's out there that has a track record for longevity and ease of use? My water is good, really only using it for trapping sediment and such.
    Ideas? Thanks in advance. JB

I’ve had one for 15 years with no problems. Have you tried to putting Vaseline on the o ring?

I have this.it has a screen not a cartridge, can be purged under pressure to clean screen and bowl with the ball valve on the bottom...if it gets too dirty just shut off inlet, bleed pressure via ball valve and unscrew it by hand....clean with tooth brush....works mint,no filters for me!!! 20180807_145920.jpg

I use GE brand (4x10) filters, but I find them quite hard to get tight enough to not leak, and then they are incredibly hard to disassemble a few months down the road. I use silicone grease (food grade) on the seals.

Edit: this type of filter GXWH35F | WHOLE HOME WATER FILTRATION SYSTEM | GE Appliances Parts I have two in series, one 20 micron, then a 5 micron. Probably overkill for the sediment I have, but I got the two of them together for a song on ebay, new.

I have had an Omni filter for over 20 years. I just bought a few extra o-rings for the jug. I swap about every 3 yrs.

Believe it or not, I don't have any Vaseline here. I thought I did, even called the wife to find out where she put it :)rofl: ) but nope..... none here.
I'll pick some up and try it tomorrow night. For the filter. Honest.

I'll check into the other filters, I wouldn't mind adding additional in-line filters. Thanks guys. JB

The Rusco is a very common grit filter with a decent reputation but it’s only for very coarse grit/sand/rust scale. I use a lakos brand twist-to-clean for grit. The kind of junk that clogs up your faucet aerators.

I’m a fan of real backwashing filters if you need something else.

Thanks for the input, nice to see you around here again. I'll look into the "Lakos" brand of filter. That GE filter I've got isn't staying.

If I was to replace the lakos I would use the rusco. It’s pretty dependable and low cost. The lakos is a little too complicated. Both filters are really screens. You can buy different size screens with different micron ratings but all of the screens are pretty big.

Vaseline can swell some o-rings and render them useless, use plumbers grease or silicone grease instead. Faucet cartridges are the worst for this.

So, thinking about a few units.
Rusko with a 500 mesh screen (30 micron) initially, then going to a EcoPure EPWHE @ 5 microns. The EcoPure cartridges aren't cheap so not sold on them yet. Still looking but pretty sure I want to get down to 5 microns at the most. But, gotta have about a 10gpm flow also. So there's that.
I do like the Rusko's, definitely using one of those. Thanks.

I just simply have a few cartridge filter in my line, after the pressure tank.

I use cheap whole house water filter cartridges. Usually run about 4-5 bucks for 2 of them.

Now I do run an RODI water filter for drinking and my aquarium and picky plants like orchids.

I'm good with simple, but the GE housing I've got is a bear to remove/install- just like BushPilots unit above. I need to have units in place I don't cringe when thinking about replacing cartridges. If I bust a housing trying to get a unit apart for service (I'm almost there..) , I need to change something to make it more user friendly.
Basically, my GE unit sucks and I need a good alternative set up.

mine just simply unscrews and you put a new filter in it after switching the bypass over so you don't get an Americas funniest home video moment. Its been simple to replace filters over at least 8 years.

We have a spigot on the sink for cooking/drinking, occasionally AQ water, much easier than we had at the previous house. That was a big box store model that worked well, but was a PITA to unscrew to change cartridges, of course they changed models 2 years later and had to buy the cartridges online and pay shipping......I had a separate RO for my aquariums, we custom drilled holes in the counter to run/drain it from there (sink drains were S/S), that was a PITA too. Here I found a 5 stage filtration, 4 canisters before hitting the RO bladder, and then fills into a 3 gal pressure tank, and the spigot, all included for around $150ish on Black Friday sale. It came with a handy dandy car oil filter'ish looking removing tool to remove/replace the canister cartridges (the canisters have ridges too).
