So I scrounged this wood over the winter. Thought it was Norway Maple. After splitting I'm not too sure. The wood is darker than what I'm used to seeing. Bb

It was left in logs in my garage for 3-4 months. Feels pretty light.

Looks like our red maple. Either way, it's probably similar

I’m thinking maple too by looking at the bark, but I’m used to seeing just white in the heartwood for Norway. I likely picked up some silver.

Looks like the Red Maple. Norway Maple is much lighter in color.

I'm leaning on the oak family. I've CSS "LOTS" of maple and that looks more on the lines oak. Bark isn't the same as maple, at least not like the stuff we have here.

Oak...would be nice, but I don't see the grain like I'm used to seeing with red oak. Plus it's quite a bit lighter than the red oak I just split, after only a few more months of drying. I'm not saying it's red oak at all, but the likelihood that it's oak doesn't seem high (though it would be nice)

Walnut...yeah, the dark heartwood totally made me think of that. But the bark is way different from any walnut I've cut.

So I'm thinking it's red maple...but I'm not even sure about that. Can't find good pictures of it split on google images.

Other characteristics...it didn't smell nice (a bit stinky) and was pretty stringy. As in, tougher to split than it looked.
