I had been whacking at a piece of knotted apple to check the MC for giggles last week. Didn’t bother to check this out.... unreal! 8EAADE12-9A15-4800-8E6A-3FC4C068E51A.jpeg
I swear on my daughter, this was not used on concrete. Never seen this happen with wood and I’ve whacked a fair amount. This is that Truper brand maul/ax. Been great but this is new indeed.

Do you use a splitting block or split on the ground? Is the bottom corner flattened off too?

What I did was I used a splitting round of oak. So hard to hard and then hard against that? Whatever kind of pressures against wood and myself I think of destruction. I’m much less kind to my equipment than one might think and I don’t use it wrongly. This is what I am and really I don’t mean it. This is a solid application to where I believe that having my own splitter is probably more cost effective on equipment because I don’t need to hammer it to submission. Perhaps that’s why I bought it because a splitter is more forgiving??:emb::whistle::hair:

That does not surprise me; fruitwood is some hard when dry.

I cut some apple that was dry on a sawmill one time and it snapped the blade in seconds flat! Fruitwood is some hard, which is why they used to use it for handsaw handles.

My cousin-in-law had this happen to him one time with a pick axe. Of course my cousin he was dating was married to my ex-cousin-in-law too. :doh:It did not dull the pick axe much though. :)

Run a file across it. If it digs in, hardness is gone. Hardened steel would not fold over like that. It would most likely have dinged/chipped if it hit a rock or metal.

Yeah this is definitely some different kind of animal here. I’m actually Glad that some of this was cut to about bread loaf size then and not now. Already have more waiting to be cut that are limb sized so I could expect some sparks to fly. I think the reason why the fella was giving it away was because it was half rotting but that’s not gonna keep me at bay. I covet apple due to being able to use it on the bbq being mild on any food I’ve cooked. In fact just thinking about it...

I’ll try that. The part of the maul eye where the company filled in some kind of glassy plastic has been shot out too... dinged up pretty good...:loco:  also I never grind anything axe wise. Just sharpen when need to but never did for this. Found no metal in the wood either.

Me too! I've got a neighbor's apple tree that was given to me last fall all bucked up and ready to split. I need to get the splitter to my house, as I'm not going to try to use my maul on it.

Mine are fairly small diameter rounds, cut after the windstorm way back in October.

What this is is the axe maul blend so its sharp..well was. But maybe if you have a more blunted maul than mine that might work much better

It looks like you were smacking a wedge and hit it with the wrong side of your tool

Yeah sure does look like it. When I was splitting, the maul stuck into part of the knotty split and I know for a fact that it was like Lizzie Borden all over again with 40 plus whacks. Finally it snapped the knot and I left it at that until I saw the head again. Goes to show you some knots are just a bit too unforgiving.
