This Friday’s windstorm in Connecticut brought down quite a few trees. That being said I went to a spot where the town dumps log length wood for the taking. There is allot of punky red oak logs there. It is easy because I can back the truck to within 5 feet or so of the wood I am processing. I cut a bit off a 16” log that has real nice heartwood. I quartered those rounds right there and shaved off allot of the punk. I ended getting around a quarter cord. Got it home, split to size and stacked in about 2.5 hours total. Great score ThomH123 Love that red oak, and the smell of BTU’s is like the Febreeze of the firewood world...
Great score - I get a lot of wood that is either center rotted or has sapwood punk - I do the same - as I split, I shave off the punk - the wood sits in the stacks so long, I don't want that punk absorbing moisture and allowing for more rot - nice work! Cheers!
Very nice! Red oak is great stuff, and worth fighting with a little squishy junk to get it. Hoard on! -edit- and I see you're prepared for a heat wave there, as well. Is that an air conditioner?
Haha, it’s a dehumidifier. Transfer station wanted $25.00 to get rid of it. I included it in a $50 load of scrap. No way I’m paying to dispose of something. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
That's how our dump is, too. Town gets enough of my money - I wait until I get a truck load and go to the scrap yard so I can at least make a few bucks of beer money.
