I posted yesterday in the chainsaw section about my saws and was cutting a white oak top. I cut another one today and got a little pig nut and started on a 2nd white oak before coming in for dinner. I enjoy working outside in this weather, no bugs and no sweat and not miserably cold. 20180207_144739.jpg 20180207_151701.jpg

What diameter do you take? 4”? 3? I tend to go smaller than many people... processed a whole black birch once... down to the smallest twigs and it all went through my stove,,, But I didn’t take any pictures.... so it never happened...

I go down to about 4" sometimes smaller if I have to cut it anyway to get it out of my path.

This is a view from my shop window. It's about 300 yards to the tree line which is also the property line. I'm cutting in the valley and the tops are everywhere but I'm cherry picking only the good hardwood. 20180207_111809.jpg

Yes they do, and make for great morning and evening fires in SS. I figure if I gotta cut it, I'm gonna keep it.

Love white oak although I don't get to burn much of it. For some reason there is very little of it whithin a 20 mile radius of here. 20 miles east and further from here it's a predominant species.
I get my wood supply from a local mill that has logs shipped in from 100 mile radius which contains oak mix but not a high percentage. I try to put it to the side in the wood room for real cold nights . Good stuff.

I love that vanilla smell of white oak, burned quite a bit of it last year but not much in the stack I am pulling from this year....quite a bit of beech and shagbark this year.

Yes, we got a bit of white oak too. Will burn that in a couple more years. Still have to get it split.
