Spent some quality time with the maul today and reinforced the 2x4's with wood screws as you guys suggested. I split one of the racks and I will do the other 2 in the next couple weeks when I have time. This is what the pile looks like now: With tarp: I am much happier with this setup as it seems to be a lot more stable with the split wood vs. the rounds. I took a closer look at the bark and leaves and did more research. I'm convinced it is pin oak, which you guys may be more familiar with due to its more northerly range. This is one of the leaves: Looking forward to burning this in the winter of '19-20.
The leaf is just a bit different than ours, but it definitely looks like pin oak. Not sure what stove you are running but some of the splits look a bit large. Also, pin oak typically takes 2-3 years to dry good.
No stove - just a fireplace. I may split some of the larger pieces before burning if I have problems.
Looks like Pin to me too. May I suggest pulling that tarp up off the stack sides? No need to drape it over like that, as it's better for airflow if you don't. How ya' liking the Fiskars?
Thanks for the welcomes, I am excited to join! Nothing but good things to say about the Isocore - it's a beast. I will put some more thought into the tarp situation and maybe come up with something different.
Nice looking wood.. I'm sure it's pin oak also, the center of the rounds in Pin Oak have a darker brown color to the wood. I think the rope you used to hold the 2 x 4s from spreading will help tremendously. Otherwise they will spread as they settle over time. Now all you have to do is wait...and then wait some more... Maybe you can find some old rubber roofing called EPDM... It's often free on Craigslist, and you can cut it to size to top cover your stacks. I cut min to about 32" wide.
Split another face cord today and reworked the tarps to get rid of the overhangs. Hopefully this will work a little better, and I can split the last one next weekend. I'm way too sore to split another rack this weekend. Also got the fireplace up and running today. We had some tree damage to the chimney so I wanted to get it looked at before firing up. Burning some old campfire wood we had and a spruce I cut down in the spring.
Lol, saw it at BJ's and couldn't resist. We have had a lot more rice in our diet since then so I don't know if it was such a smart purchase.
That's a lot of jasmine rice. Of all rices out there, I like Jasmine rice the most. Oh yeah, welcome to FHC!
