Broke a trail through my swamp yesterday since it's froze over good. Was able to sled out 3 maples and a yellow birch. Buddy from work showed up to pull out the last pieces. He was nice enough to bring some beer too!
I think that's what we refer to as red maple here. Good medium duty wood - I've got a bunch in the stacks and love it. Cuts and splits nicely, good coaling, and seems to season pretty quickly. Nice work!
It's coming down as part of my road project. Some of it's not that great but since I'm cutting it anyway might as well haul it to the stack
I pull some red maple out of the swamp here when I can. It rots so quick though if I don't get to it quick. Really not allowed to here but it's not like I'm clear cutting swamp. In fact, I'm not supposed to be any where near the boundary of 100 feet buffer zone. What they really want me to do is gift the land to the town. I don't think so.
This 'Trees are precious' movement has gotten out of hand as of late. If you own property in my locale (a mix farms, forest with small cities & small towns) you can't cut without permission: York Region’s Forest Conservation Bylaw protects forests in York Region. Under the bylaw, landowners require a permit before they can remove trees from treed areas greater than 0.2 hectares (0.5 acres). A permit must be obtained before any trees are injured or removed. It's not always that easy; many property owners are denied permission.
Thank God I am in the "Live Free or Die" state. Nobody here here is telling me what, when, how, or not to cut. Of course if one is doing a large scale logging job, I believe there is a permit required, but I think it's for revenue (tax) reasons.
Looks like my woods out back, Hey I think I can see your house. I've got spots we can't get to if it isn't frozen as well.
It's swamp. Same kind of rules apply as to wetlands. Can't "alter" them. Dead trees are considered part of the ecosystem that should not be removed as removing them alters the ecosystem. Doesn't matter that red maple is basically a weed contaminating what should be and used to be a cedar forest. Politics. And yet these same officials allowed a portion of this same swamp to be filled in to build luxury apartments. Well taxed luxury apartments. Politics.
