Just saw this post. You should never paint PVC boards a dark color, they expand and contract significantly because of the added heat absorbtion. Just google it. All the manuctures of the PVC boards say light to medium color space only. Aluminum would be a far better choice anyway in my opinion for what your doing. if you ever do the roof, look into WXL Crinkle finish steel roofing.... Great product and can go right over that asphalt at a good price. Will last for your lifetime.
I didn't end up using PVC boards. I replaced the fascia with primed boards and covered with musket brown coil. The cabin is made out of rough sawn oak that hadn't seen a sealer or stain in a long time. I just put on 30 year architectural shingles to match our house. I will have to check out the WXL steel roofing for another outbuilding project.
Grew up in a cabin and have 2 family members with cabins. Love them but they are alot of work. You have to learn to love your house. If you haven't begun your chinking and staining project yet, please consider my advice!! Use the PERMA CHINK products. Nothing else!!! www.permachink.com Yes. It is WAYYY more expensive than any other materials available but if you use their stain and clear coat you will save yourself years, yes years of time spent working on the exterior log walls. We used to use basic products found at home depot or even Sherwin Williams designed for exterior wood for over a decade. We were having to restain, reseal, fix chinking ever few years. Once we switched to Perma Chink, we never touched it again. Also, try their "Checkmate" crack sealant. Excellent product - worth the money. .....no I am not a salesman for the company. I have just wasted countless hours of time using sub-par products. This is one of those cases where you get what you pay for. The increased cost is well worth it in the end.
Great Great advice. Thank you Born2Burn. Have plenty of chinking left and will certainly check permanent chink out!
[ Lovely July day to cleanup some trees and limbs that were close to the cabin. We cut the branches hanging over the cabin and gave the oaks a nice upright profile. My oldest girls are helping with the brush and are enjoying their new swing too!
Nice work so far. It's definitely good to keep the branches off. Not only does it remove the tree highway for the critters, but will also help keep that new roof job in great shape. Seen plenty of moss ruin an otherwise fine roof.
Still working on the cabin and slowly making progress. We turned the attic storage place into a ladies loft for my three girls. Used 8 inch pine on the walls and vinyl plank on the floors. The kids are loving it.
Love building threads. You really are doing a fantastic job on your cabin in the woods. Nice family area. Glad you are moving back the tree line around the cabin. Falling trees and limbs are bad and so is air stagnation I don't like the smell of mold or the damage it does. thanks for sharing.
[QUOTE="savemoney, post: 937629, I don't like the smell of mold or the damage it does. thanks for sharing.[/QUOTE] I really insulated the attic and it originally had side vents where the windows are now. After the insulation I had a serious condensation issue in the attic. We went back and but in a ridge vent and that solved the issue. Live and learn.
