Had a friend stop by yesterday he said that they call it Swamp Ash. Who am I to argue it burns well. and I only have a small amount of it.
How did it smell when you split it? I got some stuff that looked a lot like that this fall, and couldn’t really get a solid consensus on what it might have been. I don’t recall it smelling very pleasant. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I looked up 'swamp ash' also kown as Carolina ash, and it doesn't grow in New York. The other species that came up under 'swamp ash' was green ash. Green ash is common in my area, as well as your area, but take it from an old ash cutter, dat ain't green ash. He could have meant black ash. I believe some people call it swamp ash. It grows in your area but not mine so I can't say if it is or isn't. If it is black ash; it's the hottest burning ash.
Not to hijack your thread, but here is the mystery wood I had. They look very similar. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
That wood kind of looks like the Kentucky coffee tre I cut last year. You can search for pictures of it on this forum under that name.
The grain does but the bark looks different. I may go out when the trees leaf out and see if I can identify it. They don't seem to get very big and there aren't a lot of them. The only reason I cut this one is it was in the way.
