    I am not quite sure what this wood is I thought maybe you hoarders out there could help.

    Hickory would be my guess. It looks like it split real easy.

    Had a friend stop by yesterday he said that they call it Swamp Ash. Who am I to argue it burns well. and I only have a small amount of it.

    How did it smell when you split it? I got some stuff that looked a lot like that this fall, and couldn’t really get a solid consensus on what it might have been. I don’t recall it smelling very pleasant.

    I looked up 'swamp ash' also kown as Carolina ash, and it doesn't grow in New York. The other species that came up under 'swamp ash' was green ash. Green ash is common in my area, as well as your area, but take it from an old ash cutter, dat ain't green ash.

    He could have meant black ash. I believe some people call it swamp ash. It grows in your area but not mine so I can't say if it is or isn't. If it is black ash; it's the hottest burning ash.

    Kinda looks like mimosa. I've cut some that looks similar. Not good for much but kindling if so

    The grain does but the bark looks different. I may go out when the trees leaf out and see if I can identify it. They don't seem to get very big and there aren't a lot of them. The only reason I cut this one is it was in the way.
