A couple days ago I was working outdoors and it was a bit chilly. Came inside later and to my surprise, it was really toasty warm inside. It used to be my wife could not start a fire worth a hoot. However, she did just fine with this one and has been doing so ever since we started using the Super Cedars. No kindling did she have either. Well, today, it is wet and cool so I started a fire without kindling too. Feels great. This reminds me. I think I'll have to contact Thomas to tell him about the new forum. Maybe we can get a Super Cedar discount off this forum. We'll see.
I love Super Cedars Dennis. I need to place an order asap. I had to run to Menards and buy a bag of Fatwood this morning since I am out of them. It would be great if Thomas would give the forum a discount code.
Dry wood is key for fires from beginning to end Guy was at the cutting area getting a load, I had the road blocked with some rounds. As I made room for him to get by, I asked how long he seasoned his wood. Will burn it soon after split he said. I mean I'm seeing running water on the splitter wedge when splitting. Tried the dry talk of seasoning at least 1 year after split & stacked, no go, says split it around 4" & it's good to go. I told him my stove wouldn't burn the wet stuff. He went on his way. He sure gonna boil lots of water off before he ever gets any heat, if he can get it to burn at all.
I am using SuperCedars for the first time this season and ordered a box of 100. Dry wood makes for easy starts--even w/o kindling. I agree Dennis, we should see if we can get a discount on this forum.
Thats my fear about getting a wood stove is that my wife will hate having to learn how to start a fire. Which then means I have to start everyone but thats ok as being new I will need lots of practice getting my techniques down pat.
My wife pitched a fit to High Heaven when I announced several years ago that we were getting a woodstove...she fought against it DILIGENTLY! But, at the end of the day, I won out. Fast forward almost 7 years and she now LOVES both of our stoves....in fact, she'd KILL me if I told her I was getting rid of them! She's done pretty good at starting fires, but she does and EXCELLENT job of banking the stoves off and of keeping them fired when I'm not home. She's got her share of battle scars on her forearms too (as do I) from burns here and there (not using the welding gloves like I tell her), but all in all, she's a stove champion. We love our woodstoves, they are like part of the family, LITERALLY!
Yea I already have her onboard with the stove itself, and it helps she sees all the hard work i put in splitting wood for a stove we dont even have yet. I will just have to set it up like you said so she can just restoke the fire and keep it going. Our work hours overlap well for being able to tend to a stove.
A new box of super cedars arrived tuesday. Nothing hard about stating a fire from scratch with those.
I think a couple videos are in order (we can even make our own videos here) in regards to starting easy fires......that's something maybe we could work on. I split up a TON of pine heartwood last fall, and packed it in boxes. MAN does that stuff light up easy. One piece of that fatwood, some kindling, and a single match, and you are off to the races..... They you also have the wax/sawdust/noodle firestarters that you can make with your wife/kids out of noodles (from cutting rounds long-ways) and old candles. They are fantastic fire starters as well....and fun to make!
I'm going to make some time Saturday and make a couple cartloads of kindling out of some pine I cut down in the spring. Gonna do like Dennis suggested and try making some with the hydraulics (maybe make some maple kindling too). Enough that I can get through the fall/spring shoulder seasons. Once winter sets in, the fires go NON-STOP until spring.....
I am the stove newb in our family. My wife grew up w/a stove; I grew up in the city relying on the gas man. Started burning when we moved into a house w/a wood stove 13years ago. Have never looked back since and can't imagine going without it. She does a great job keeping our unit going thruout the day during the winter.
My wife also grew up in the 70's-80's with a woodstove as the sole source of heat for most of her childhood/teen years. It was an old smoke dragon and they burned 3-month seasoned wood (mostly oak) in the winters, which led to the entire house smelling like creosote all year long.....she hated it. That was the biggest hang-up when I announced we were going with wood heat. Once she saw a stove work with properly seasoned wood, she fell in love with it! After a couple years of her parents seeing the EPA stove work so well, they got rid of the smoke dragon, upgraded to a Napoleon 1900p just like mine, and started burning properly seasoned wood (after some coaching). Well, now they burn wood, efficiently, and they love it.
I'll second the idea or hopes that we can get Thomas to give a discout to this forum. I was going to order some last week and tried the old "H...." discount code and it was not good anymore so I let it slide for now. I still have several left from last year. Now the wife and the stove that's another subject. She could keep the old stove going if she remembered to do it. I don't know about this new cat stove.
LP, pretty sure Pete has already been in contact with them and if I'm not mistaken they are going to set us up!
Yes I have emailed them but am awaiting a response I will let you all know if something comes of it. Fingers crossed !
