Sometimes I forget how silly long a BK can burn. My daughter had surgery yesterday morning to have her tonsils and adenoids removed along with having another set of ear tubes installed(she's recovering great so far, she's been nothing short of amazing being 23 months old!). I loaded the stove Monday morning at 5:30am and still had enough coals in the stove to load full splits when I got home at 3pm today(Tuesday). We had highs in the lower 50's Monday and today so the heat demand was low, the stove room was still 71 with the rest of the lower level in the upper 60's. It was nice to come home 33+ hours later and be able to just toss wood in the stove. The stove top still 170 when I reloaded.
Glad the surgery went well. Last thing you need to worry about is coming home to a cold house. Sounds like you have that covered.
Best of luck to your daughter. That sounds like a lot for a 23 month old. And yeah, the burn times are pretty cool. I usually have to toss in some cedar shake kindling after that amount of time, but a few puffs of my "dragons breath" gets those going. Active flame not required.
Thank you! Thank you, yeah it's a lot to deal with at that age. The biggest thing is they need to drink, it's hard to explain to a 2 year old that it hurts to swallow but you have to drink. She's doing great though, today before they discharged us she was running around the pediatrics wing like she owned the place. :lol:
I'm really surprised that it held coals for that long. With my stove I generally have to relight a fire if I let it go a day or so. Sometimes there's a bit of embers left, but not enough heat in them to get fresh wood burning.
Nate, just different wood. rdust has true hardwood, we don't- not so much. That's why a bit of cedar on the few coals I'd have at that point would let it catch.
When my six year old was at Mott for four days for appendicitus, I came home every day to load the stove. Mostly because the furnace wasn't working, and it was January, and partly because it was good to get away for a bit and have a shower at home. Wife and I took turns. Kids can be pretty amazing. Mine never shed a tear through the whole thing. Not once, for pain, or fear, or having a bunch of people poking her. That whole facility is amazing, as well. Glad she is doing well.
Sometimes, we forget that others may be having a difficult time in their lives. Yet, they're still willing to assist another. Thanks Rick, and I'm glad your daughter is doing better. Give her big hugs from all of us. Kids are definitely resilient.
My stove will hold coals with locust or oak if I have a good ash bed for a long time. Haven't tried it that long yet
Glad to hear your daughter was feeling better and running around, I have a two year old as well and it breaks my heart when she isn't feeling good. Hope she continues to get better. Had a friend have a baby just a few days before my wife had our two year old that had some liver issues, they did t realize it until one day he was acting really weird and a nurse friend told them they needed to go to the ER now. Drs said the baby was hours away from being too late to save him I know they went through a lot of rough times so I can imagine what it was like seeing your baby like that. Pray she continues to heal and has that joy of being a little kid.

Glad the recovery is going well rdust. Since I got the BK at home, I hate going to camp and dealing with 4 hour burn times. Hope to fix that this year.
Good to hear daughter is doing well. Went thru similar with granddaughter a few years back. BK still impressive, after 3 + years I still am amazed how much the technology improvements in stoves has improved .
