I heard the loggers working today next door so I went over on my 4 wheeler to take a look. Got a chance to talk with one guy after he dropped a red oak on a logging road. He said he was surprised to see anyone so far back and away from the road. As I suspected they are done on my end or about 300 yards in. I went back later in the evening to cut for an hour or so and took some pics. The 1st pic is of the path they used to pull down some very large oaks and other logs, the pic doesn't show that it's almost straight up at the top. The rest are various piles of tops , walnut and spignut I've started and a mess of white oak with a little shagbark.
I get it all but I have no illusions of being able to do that much work (I'm 68 yo) The owner of the property bought it abour a year ago for the timber , he owns a large sawmill . I made a deal with him giving him a couple trees on the property line in exchange for exclusive rights to the tops. I have the only easy access to the property. My plan is to cut as many tops to length as I can and then try to haul them out with help in one day. I'm going to let a neighbor and another guy I know get some.
Fear not at 68; just go head long into it! Do it while you can! They will have to do something with that skid road else rain will do some bad damage there.
I dont think it matters to the owner, the whole site looks like a war zone. The road to the landing is pretty steep too and if it washes out the entire valley will be inaccessible to normal vehicles except thru my property.
Yep like others have said. Just take your time and pace your self and get what you can. I am slower than I used to be with lots of breaks but I can still get the job done. Some really nice wood you have access to there. Congrats on that one.
