My parents have quite a bit of sulfur in the well and I don't know what else. Their water does more damage to plumbing fixtures than anywhere I've been. I have to replace faucets about every 5 years or so for them. They are used to it but something will have to be done when the house is sold.
I've done this twice, and it is very effective and recommended by the local well guy. It takes a long time to get the last of the bleach out of the system. I run the hose for about 4 hours to get it out. It's all relative and I don't know the depth of my well.
Depth of the well isn't as important as you might think. Some wells have water right up to the surface and some have an empty casing all the way to almost the bottom. Then there is drawdown during pumping, recovery rate, and levels of shmuck able to absorb your chlorine that all have an effect on the dose. Well drillers are not always very smart. They use bleach as a trick to pass water purity tests when the well is first drilled. Is the water in the acquifer contaminated? Or did the well driller just drop a turd in the well casing? Bleach will kill either one and allow the water to test as good. Another trick they use is to microwave the sample.
Update: Yesterday after 96 hours of leaving the bleach in the well and in the house plumbing, I pumped all the bleach out of the well and plumbing and flushed everything several times over. Took about 7 hours total. The water is clear and odorless. So far so good. I'll see if anything changes in the next few weeks. Thanks
