Reach all the way across that log as far as you can and cut into the back side of it. Once you have cut maybe 1/3 of the way back towards the front, roll the saw into a level position. Now it will only need to be about 2/3 as long bar as the log is in diameter, because you already cut the back 1/3 out. Definitely use wedges to prevent pinching that new bar.
Well I cut it, with my husband supervising and taking pictures. We had it chocked on some 4x4's, and I managed to keep the blade tip out of the dirt. It took 3 cuts to section the log. One on the far side, down to 180°, then a horizontal on the near side, then rolled over to do the underside. The first section I did a little crooked, the second one was straighter. I didn't use the felling wedge, too much to juggle. This is all probably really boring for you all, but I wanted to report back.
You did just fine! Soon we'll be calling you a pro. As for a couple cuts being a little crooked compared to the others, don't worry a bit about that. You got the job done nicely.
X2 And safely too Great job Midwinter When I do cut, I have to accommodate my lower back, so I'll usually go to one knee for the horizontal cut, Midwinter... Seeing you bend that far over may be ok for you, but that would put me down for a week if I did that. Keep on cutting :stacke:
I am blessed with a back that recovers pretty quick after overdoing things. I did pull a groin muscle (no cracks, please) in June, was quite painful, and took about a month to completely shake. I'll remember to try taking a knee to cut, if I feel the need. Thanks!
I'm blessed with a taste for good bourbon which makes my back pains go away temporarily. Problem is when I wake up tomorrow morning, drinking in the workplace is frowned upon unless I'm taking customers out.
Went back for a second load of birch in N Reading. I'll have to go back a third time for the skinny stuff, there was no room for it plus the hand truck. This birch will be my first priority splitting, I hate leaving birch out in the weather.
I see three logs where there was one. No report of 8n jury or tool damage. Can't ask for any better than that! Sent from my SM-T280 using Tapatalk
Good show all around. Definitely expedite the splitting of those birch rounds, they'll go to hell but quick wrapped up in their bark.
Dude, I have never seen one of those! That's fantastic! And thank you for introducing me on another way to spend my money on toys for wood.
They make rolling n moving big stuff much easier , great tool to have I don't mind helping ya spend your money Let us know how ya like it when ya get it
Three car loads, not bad for $30. I think the homeowner was using the "charge a nominal price, keep the freebie hordes away" strategy. I need to stop bringing new stuff home for awhile, until I can clear out space for a new wood crib.
The scale in pics is so hard to judge! Last summer I went to look at some oak, in Chelmsford I think, that looked manageable. Turned out the rounds we're about 4' in diameter and 3' thick! You may remember the post, guy was on CL for a couple months begging someone to take it away.
No I didn't see that one. I didn't start my hoarding search online until last December. I probably would have made an attempt at that one though.
