Well because my knee went bad and I'm on a cane I had to slow down this summer and it's hard to cut firewood when when your using a cane... So to FHC for the 3 year plan cause I'm still set with firewood.. Anyway my little brother came up to help cut a dead Pine that a branch had fallen and blocked a trail. Now in the past I would have gotten impatient and did it myself but because I'm moving slower I let him cut the tree and he pinched the bar. Now we both are a little ADHD.. and have a history of not listening to each other.. So I get there and you can see the tree is sitting back 5 to 10 degree so I told him a wider face cut would have solved problem and I have to teach him bore cut..Base is about 28 inches.. Pics aren't great cause to dark in woods at 2pm but here they are.. The stump Bucket pushing it over as wedges would not move this tree a little nerve-wracking because dead Pine branches 50 ft in the air are not healthy for anything Here you can see the face cut being too narrow and there is a 460 Rancher with a 20 inch bar stock to the right but you might not be able to see it So we both learn to work together and about another cord of dry Pine for 2018-2019
No darn it my bad.... You know Eric I have only had a smart phone for a monthand chainsaw for 25 years lol... I took the shot of the tree and checked it for safety... the wind picked up and I wanted it down.. til I joined FHC... why would I need a pic.. teaching an old dog a new trick... but I'll take some more of the rounds.. and next time there a gtg I'll go so you can teach me how you get all the great pics you do... I'm a nervous nelly, I check the tree.. wind.. lean.. I check face cut for rot and ants when felling do NOT wear ear protection as the cracking of tree tells me things.. Bucking I use helmet and ear muffs when felling I go slow check 3 times and put it down safely.. Brother has a learning disability dyslexic. .. so I was focusing on the whole learning the lean of the tree.. I pushed it over with Kubota FEL it was 80 percent cut but i wanted a clean push and NOT rock it so it would fall in intended direction and dead pine branches wouldnt rain down.. a bigger 28 to 30 dbh tree is different technique 12 to 16 .. when bar will not make a single back cut...and I wanted him to learn
Well I hope that knee heals up quickly and I'm glad all went well. It don't matter how old we get, we treat our siblings like we are still kids!
A poor excuse for not using ear protection. Not truly a criticism but a different perspective. You are right about the cracking telling you something, but ear protection just reduces the volume setting of noises around you, it does not block sounds. I find, after over 40 years of using ear protection, that I can tell a lot more when I have the plugs in because much of the irritating background noise is almost gone and I can focus on what is important to hear.
