A couple of recent threads reminded me of an incident a couple of years ago where I could have used a hand. On vacation, pulling travel trailer, broke down. It all worked out okay, but I was reminded of something else. Back in the day when I had a Dodge pickup, I was active on the Turbo Diesel Register forums. They had a guide you could sign up for to offer help, and if you signed up you got a booklet with one of the quarterly magazines. You provided a city/state, contact info, mechanical skill and resource level, if/how far you were willing to travel, etc. Keep the booklet in your truck, and if you needed help on the road, there was a good chance you could find someone close by. I'm pretty sure this was adapted from something similar that a BMW motorcycle owners group put together. Is there any interest in participating in something like that here? We are a small group, but I'm sure most of us would bend over backwards to help another. I will admit I don't have the skills to put something like this together, but it probably doesn't have to be as involved. I had thought about adding something to the sig box, indicating your willingness to help, and just PMing. I get almost instant email notification on my phone when I get a PM. The problem with that, even though many/most of us have mobile devices, is that there is still the dead zones. The route I travel to our place in northern Michigan has about a two hour stretch where I have no data service, except for downtown Atlanta. So, unless I broke down right in town, I would have no way to contact papadave Plus, it would be great if members were separated by state. Maybe a pdf? I could download a pdf with my phone, tablet, or computer, and access it anytime. Just throwing an idea out there.
Well, Jeff, if you break down somewhere close to Atlanta, gimme a buzz. I'll gladly help if I can. I know a couple mechanics in town too. I'm curious why you'd go through here to get to there, though. Do you come up through Gaylord for some reason?
That's what I am trying to come up with is a list of those here who would be willing to help another one of us passing thru. I know you would, but the only way I could contact you is thru here. See what I'm saying? 75 to 68 seems like it would be faster, because of way more interstate, but coming up 33 takes about the same time and it is 35 miles or so less. Or, 1-3 gallons of gas, depending on what I drive
