Saw an auction sale bill that had chainsaws listed and pictures of 2 orange cases . As I couldn't make it I asked the boss to watch them and gave instructions that I would take any saw for $20 and $100 for Husky, Echo or Stihl. He picked this up for just over $100. Seems to start well and rev fine, just not idle so hoping an adjustment on the idle will take care of it. It also has an 18" bar with .325 .063 (74?) link chain. Bar needs dressed and chain sharped, but thinking of replacing bar and getting better chains. Debated on converting it to 3/8" chain, but was advised to stay with what is on it. If I replace the bar should I go shorter (maybe 16")? I use my 365SP for most cutting but a lighter saw would be nice, and still need to pop the muffler to look at the piston/cylinder. More to come.
Nice score. The gas tank has been swapped out, so it's hard to say what the vintage might be. It would probably benefit from a muffler mod, which in turn might require a new carburetor if the original isn't adjustable. The new carb would probably solve your idle problem too. I really like having a 16" 3/8 LP bar on my 026. The bar and sprocket to do that aren't available everywhere anymore, but last time I checked they were fairly easy to find on eBay.
I've tried regular 3/8 and .325 on the 260's and they prefer the. 325 when in stock form. Sent from my Z832 using Tapatalk
I prefer the .325 on these saws as well, I have 16" .325 on my 260, and 20" .325 on my 261. Both run great with that chain pitch. However I have not tried the 3/8 LP.
Fully adjustable carb. I think it just needs the idle turned up as it does not hesitate when opening it up from a held idle, if that makes sense. I should pull the muffler to take a look inside. I don't think I did too bad on the saw.
You did very good, I'd jump on that deal every day. Everyone has their needs and preferences but I like the .325 at 16" on this saw. The 2 piece muff is simple to mod. cut out the baffle or drill a couple 3/8" holes in the back. On the outside section there are about 5 exit holes, remove the screen and turn the holes into 1 slot with a dremel. Tweak the carb and with a yellow chain you will have a screamer, the power to weight ratio is perfect.
If you have other saws for big work I would go smaller like 16 inch but stay with the .325. My own 026 runs fine with a 20 inch on it but it was my only saw for a long time. Now that I have my 555, I sort of hold that long bar 026 back to use for rescue work.
