Had basketball games until 1pm today and then headed North fro some hiking at Old Man's Cave to enjoy the nice weather today. Ended up hiking close to 7 miles between and hiked up to 6:15pm. Man some of the trails were downright treacherous! There was so much solid ice build up on them you couldn't even stand and we had to abort a few due to dangerous conditions. We actually ended up sliding down some ice hills because you couldn't stand on them! Here are a few pics of the awesome day we had Ice at the bottom of the Ash Cave Waterfall. It was flowing well with all the recent rain and snow melting My daughter and I standing on the Ice Pile Cedar Falls Rose Lake Rare occasion My wife and I both mad it in a picture. Kaylee wanted to take it for us Found a nice stream and for some odd reason there were a bunch of crawdads out. We caught a bunch of them and Kaylee wasn't real sure about it at first but she was catching them like a pro before it was all over.
What a perfect day for it. Thanks for sharing the pictures. I think it's great that your daughter enjoys getting out and hiking also. That's what we do all the time with the girls also. I can see them showing up most of the boys when it comes to hiking, catching craw dads and getting campfires started. You probably went right by me, I'm near Ash Cave.
Yeah they were moving really slow we didn't keep any just had fun catching them. Kaylee was all worried they were going to pinch her but she got over it.
Nice I had no idea anyone on this site lived that close to me! We love Old Man's cave area but we have learned that it can be so crowded and busy in the summer months that we have started going at odd times of the year to get away from the crowds. We also go to a lot of the other hiking areas around the caves which tend to be even less busy as well as the long trails that not very many people use
I agree that it's nice to go when its not too busy and you get to see all the cool icicles and works of nature that the area is blessed with during the different seasons. Finding new places to explore is half the fun. I snapped this pic in the back of my property recently. Not too often when it freezes from top to bottom. Needs to be sunny and really cold to make this happen. Keep enjoying this with your family. Makes great memories.
What a lovely day you had. Awesome area. It must be beautiful in the fall as well. I can see it being really busy in the summer though. when you have weather like you did on this trip, there is no reason not to get out and enjoy it.
