Yup - was browsing the listings, and found one that had free wood. Next town over, about 15miles round trip. Not sure exactly what kind, but free is free. Some of it is some kind of maple. The "plus" was on my way home. Saw that an oak had fallen by the side of the road. Rotted out at the roots, but the trunk was solid. The highway dept had cut it up to move it off the road. So... I pulled over, put on my flashers, and chainsawed up a few pieces. Hmm.. not sure why the pics aren't as clear as they usually are. I'll have to take a closer look at that. All told, I'm guessing about a cord of wood once CSS'd.
Nice haul!!! Love the two for one trips. My neighbor down the road had a large oak cut down but the tree service hauled it all off before I could ask them for it. Rats!!
It doesn't look like it's all from the sane tree. Bigger pieces could be Norway maple. The stuff with the greenish hued bark looks like silver maple. And i think i see a stray "tree of heaven" branch in the pile too.
Im seeing some apple in there but cant be super certain. Its the way how the bark is chipped. Its your last photo I believe... you did good! Im lucky when I get wood that isn't looking like it was sitting in mud. The best pick up is when you go see the wood being cut down and then you load from there. Then you know where it came from and no other variables. Picking up enough off CL, you get pretty selective because its the clean up afterwards. I don't wanna be rude and leave if wood is looking weird when I get there so I take some and go. But I have to draw a line where I see more rotting wood than anything.
Yeah - there's wood from multiple trees there. The wood that looks like it's split in half, is actually from two trees growing up against each other, thus the "half" look. I only had to chainsaw a few pieces too big for me to lift. In the last picture, the wood with the flaked off reddish brown brown bark, was much lighter in weight, than the "halved" rounds. I'm guessing the rounds are some sort of maple. Unsure about the reddish brown stuff. But, free is free!!
The first pic in your 2nd post is definitely Norway maple. That's good stuff. Best I can tell burning wise it's on par with sugar. Drys fast. It's now considered a weed tree as fast as it spreads and grows. If I could contain it to my property I'd plant an acre or two just for future firewood since it grows so fast
Figured I just tag along with MikeinmMa post. My first CL score also. Not sure what kind of wood is, but likely some ash and maple I'm thinking. Took a truck load and may go back next week. Noticed it on CL 3 weeks ago, looks like plenty of wood left.
I would guess that last picture as SPR generic term for soft woods. I have seen it before on trees that bear needles.
