A friend of mine makes handmade turkey box calls. He makes one sided and two sided box calls. They range from $20 to $75 depending on how fancy and the type of wood it's made out of and the engravings on the call. Here are some pictures of three that I have now. There is only one two sided call left. He does however have about a dozen right handed one sided call in stock. The one sided calls have a thumb grove to place your thumb in so you can cut with it. Ever call is unique and beautiful in its own way. Some of the wood that he uses are Maple (all types), Pig nut Hickory, Walnut, Sassafras, Beech and Cedar. He also does some nice art work as well on the handle as well. When he builds the double sided calls each side has its own tone. I think that these calls sound awesome and Scotty Overkill can attest to this he has two or three of his calls! If you would like to purchase a call let me know what type of wood that you would like the call made out of (top, bottom and sides). And the style of call (double sided, right handed, left handed). All calls are hand rubbed with Tung oil. Here's the pictures! This one has a Norway Maple handle and a solid piece of Curly Maple box with a piece of the bark still on it. $70. This one is has a Curly Maple top, Walnut sides and a Hickory bottom. $70.
Sign me up!!! Those are pretty nice! Wonder what kind of tones you get from the different woods? Now just to pick the right one
Will do I still have all 3 from the original post. Me personally I think that they all sound great. I just got him some more wood. A yellow pine beam from a barn built in 1874, a piece of Silver Maple with some nice spalding in it and a beautiful piece of Norway Maple with some sweet curl in it. Now you just need to tell me which wood and what style of call and what kind of tone you'd like and I'll see what he can do. And I'll tell him to give me an idea of a price.
This is the art work that he normally does on the handles. He didn't burn this one in yet it's just drawn on it pencil to show as an example.
The ones that are posted are no longer for sale. J. Dirt bought all 3. Although my buddy is making more so as he gets them made I'll post them with the prices!
So I got my calls from blacksmith today and let me tell you..... They look awesome (especially to an FHC member with an appreciation for fine wood, like myself) and they sound even better!!!! If I get a few minutes tomorrow for a video, maybe I'll even get up early and see if I can strike up some conversation with ol' Tom
