    Thinking about a job change.
So, how much are you allowed to embellish on a resume these days? If anything, I hate toot'in my own horn so I don't know where the "line" is. Also...
I can pass for 40yrs old vs. 50, where can I get fake documents. Just asking for a friend in a similar circumstance.

I am a big believer in NOT embellishing. Perhaps I have missed some opportunities, but I have never disappointed an employer that hired me - in fact they have all been delighted that I can do what I say I can do and more.

You don't have to put your whole work history down or your graduation date or anything. Just give general listing roles/duties you have had

    resume summary.PNG resume summary 2.PNG

Under Professional Experience list your past employers that you had relevant experience with. Depending on how long ago, you may or may not want to put the actual years worked (2001-2004), but might instead put in 4 Years at XYZ Factory as Documentation Specialist.

    Hope this helps

Resume for me is short and sweet...I list previous work history and a brief description of my work from my last employer. If I had to read the resume bogieb shows, I would most likely assume a guy with 12 years experience could not possibly be that important. I could fill 30 sheets with experience, past jobs, people I have trained...Just don't think it matters. Get face to face with the employer and he should be able to tell if you know what is going on!!

I think there are studies that say the average resume is looked at for something like 20 seconds. Put what experience you have that is relevant to the job you are seeking at the top.

Well, you're correct, I'm not important, just a work-a-bee that is required to fill many rolls - all of which appear as "requirements" on the job post. I actually have 40 years experience, but this is directly the experiences that fit the job I was looking for (and which I got interviewed for and received the job).

I certainly was not insinuating that you are not important, not sure where you read that (Sorry if it comes off that way). Everyone has to do what they feel they need to do, for me simplicity has worked. I am also just a work-a-bee trying to make it from paycheck to paycheck.

You probably meant that you didn't believe that it was important to say that I had 12 years experience. However, the job I was applying for required 10 years experience so I put that as one of the first things they found out. Also, most people skimming resumes for my type of position would skim the main bullet points/ categories (which can easily be done in 20 seconds), then if they wanted more info, they would look at the sub bullet points.

It all depends on the type of position and industry. This resume was specifically targeted to that employer and the position they needed filled. If I were applying to load trucks, it wouldn't be nearly like that (and yes, I have loaded trucks for a living). When I applied for my night cleaning position I just filled out the job application and didn't even bother filling in my previous salaries since they had no bearing on what I was trying to accomplish.

You just need to find out how best to target your audience.

Now days most places you are dealing with an HR department prior to getting any where else in the corporate structure. Keep it very short and pertinent - details can be supplied by request. Course some of this depends on the level of employment one is seeking - Just another one of the games we have to play.

Yeah, it kinda is a game to an extent.
My current job started out by having the HR guy tell me I didn't even qualify to take the test from which they then interview the top scorers. Guess who got the top score?
Point is, my resume was done with the assistance of a resume writer (person, not a program) and was pretty darn good if I do say so myself...but the pencil pushing HR guy hadn't the first clue about industrial/municipal maintenance...I had to call him up and explain some things on my application/resume before even being allowed to test. I guess sometimes it just comes down to if it was meant to be or not because some places wouldn't have even allowed me the chance to argue my application...fight for it if you really want it!

I was always with the impression to submit a resume that isn't too wordy. No one will take the time to read through it anyway once they meet/interview you. But I have never done anything other than hourly paid jobs.

When it comes to salaried jobs, say like an engineer, well then, plan on spending a day or two with a few different teams of people asking questions and meeting you. A definite advantage to have a portfolio instead of a resume in that case!

    Sorry, BTW.

Good luck! I also am considering a change of employers.

I have done a lot of hiring back when I was in the work-a-day world. Naturally I've read a lot of resumes but few that were good. Many have asked me what make a good resume and I tell them the number one rule is make it like you would make a ladies skirt; Long enough to cover the subject but short enough to keep it interesting.

You are not trying to get hired when filling out a resume. The number one thing you want is an interview with the employer. Go give them just enough information to that it will create interest in you. You can fill in the blanks at the interview.

I also highly advise to never ever send a resume without a good cover letter and this is where you can really create the interest you want.

But never ever even consider being untruthful. One untruth will undo 100 good things about you.
