and its a little different, but in a good way.
The new cat doesn't use the cast iron housing. It has it's own steel housing and just replaces the old housing.
    check it out.

I like the new design! How is it performing compared to the old one?

Burning up the coals completely. :fire:
It was a long 6 weeks till Woodstock got them in stock!

I have been using a 2nd Gen SS cat for a month now. I really like it so far, it is much quicker to light off and much more active than my first gen SS ever was. I engaged it at 125F STT and 425F on the CP (Cat Probe) yesterday from a cold stove, no stall. I did keep flames in the firebox for ~5 min until the CP was up to about 800F. Also, the 2nd gen seems to collect less fly ash so far, not sure why but I looked it over from the firebox with a flashlight yesterday and it looked perfectly clean.
I think you are going to like it.

Interesting.. I see a center support on the new cat. Is there a support on the other side too? They might have done this to prevent or reduce sagging..

I'm surprised it took them so long. I'll probably purchase one next year and keep my ceramic for a spare.

The new one looks identical to what is in my IS beta stove. I believe they are the same part.

Yes, this is the same cat.

Tim, I hope you used the shipping bolts to hold that thing in place. It is so light that the bolts surely are needed. I have not yet put ours in but may soon.

There is nothing holding the cat in place in the IS. It just sits in the sled.

    Hi Dennis
Yes I did use the shipping bolts as recommended. The new cat is so light it wants to slide out of the opening. They give you a tiny packet of high temp never seize to put on the bolts also. Bolts only need to be finger tight plus a 1/4 to 1/2 turn, just enough to keep it from moving.

    Hi Raybonz
I did look at the bottom but don't remember if there was a support. I will check the next time I have it out.

They sit a bit different in the Fireview vs the IS.

My 2nd Gen SS came with shipping bolts for the KS. Definitely lighter than the 1st Gen with the cast frame.

Still showing out of stock on the website?? Are they back-ordered, just passing them out as they come in from the supplier?

They said they were shipping them out in the order that the calls came in.
It took 6 weeks from the time I first called.
I'm not sure how long they were out of stock.

I really like the new design, with straight rows and it looks like the cells are more open. I think with the frame being stainless, there will be more even expansion and contraction hopefully keeping the interam gasket intact longer.

I am going to buy one in the off season, but my 2nd 1st generation cat is on the way out the door so I might have to go back to the ceramic cat for the time being.

    Hi jdonna
The instruction sheet says the frame is steel.
I'm sure the catalyst will wear out before the steel frame

Right now I've got the original ceramic in there. I also have a 1st gen. steel cat that seems to be working OK. I'd like to get another frame for that one so that I could easily switch back and forth to compare the two....

I have switched back and forth between the two 1st gen and ceramic. I think the ceramic held a higher temp later into the burn than the 1st gen stainless. My second 1st gen stainless has been doing a better job though.

I had sent the 1st stainless one back to woodstock but never did hear what the failure analysis was on it, I believe it was sent back with a bunch of other customers.

There seems to be some confusion with stove owners on the warranty of a cat. Cats are only warrantied from the date of purchase of the stove, not from the date of purchase of the cat itself.

With that said, Woodstock gave me a deal on the second stainless steel cat.

I've been led to believe there is a warranty on replacement cats bought from Woodstock also.
There is nothing in the receipt or installation guide that confirms this.
I will email them and ask. I will update this thread when I find out.
