A couple of mornings ago, as I pulled into my usual spot at work , I heard a loud "ripping" noise. I looked up to see a tree directly in front of me come crashing down through a wood picket fence. The top of it landed about 30 feet from my front bumper. It was only one trunk that fell from a multi trunked tree inside the baseball park fence behind my shop. I got a chance to cut it up today and got a truck load of wood. Pretty sure it's a maple but what do you guys think?

Agree that it looks like red maple - tried to check for opposite branching on the first pic twigs, but couldn't tell very well. Nice that nothing was damaged - good score! Cheers!

Right on. Maple is good and yes, soft maple typically will many times grow in clumps like that.

That maple can tend to barber chair but I've never had one do it to me yet. Let us hope it stays that way.

yup maple, our sugar grow like that sometimes too.. usually not more the 3 leaders.. that's what we call them that trunk looks like 5 or 6 so would be a red great wood and not far out of the way.. assuming you work there for a while

I believe that the frequent barber chair reputation comes from the multiple stemed trunks forcing the trees to grow into severe leaners as they compete for light.
Plus in sewi at least we have Union carpenter ants eating out the center.
