Would pictures of anything else help to id? Short of cutting it down, that is. I did not see any seed pods in the immediate vicinity. Many thanks to all for the help. I'm pretty curious about this tree!

BGH I am going to say that you have misidentified your own wood in your first picture. That thing looks like a honey locust to me. The hawthorns I have seen never have branched thorns like those.
Sorry it's a Hawthorn it has single leaves and small berry like fruits in the summer. As hawthorns age the thrones develop on the trunk. I'm 40 and grew up on this property trust me they are Hawthorn. If you look closely in the second photo you can see a Hawthorn seedling next to the HL.
