At first I was hoping this was black oak, but now I'm leaning towards sassafras. It has the orange bark color, been laid down well over a year (storm), but is still solid. It definitely has a strong scent, but I wouldn't call it very sweet. There are no leaves around it except oak leaves. But like I said it's been down for over a year anyway. I know sassafras isn't he best firewood so please tell me it's black oak or something. Regardless I'm going to split and stack it.

    Thanks

Looks like sass from here. Does it smell like root beer? It's decent firewood, comparable to red maple. I usually use it for kindling because it splits so easily

Not really, but it's been down a long time. All the bark fell of after I bucked it. It's the most scentful tree I've cut up for sure.

It's not black oak I'm sorry to say. I can't say for sure if it's sas because I've not seen any since I was a kid.

But what's for sure is it will season and make, at the very least, good shoulder season wood.

Yep... Sassafras. I have a ton of it... I never leave it to rot, and always take it for the stacks. Doesn't really rot anyway, great for fence posts.

I've noticed the wood smells something pungent, but shaving the bark with a pocket knife is closer to the root beer scent.
Either way, let's see how great it looks S/S'd:thumbs:

Yes its Sassafras. You will notice its much lighter than oak or other hardwoods. Its a great carving wood also.
