I'm not marginalizing people who struggle and need temporary/permanent assistance for real reasons, but folks who live at the "poverty level" income in the US still have it better than 98% of the rest of the world. I stumbled across a neat little calculator that helps demonstrate this. (Albeit they want a donation) it really helped me remember how blessed we are to live in this great country and not take for granted the life we enjoy here. (Who would have guessed almost all of us are "1 percenters"? Lol)

Give 'em an inch, they'll want a foot.

Or give 'em a wood stove, they'll want chainsaw, fuel tank, oil, tools, chaps, PPE, thermometers, venting, and on and on....get the picture?

I get asked all the time if I want to buy foodstamps.
I usually offer $00.25 on the dollar. Sometimes I get lucky

It's fun to be indignant about how unfair everything is and how those people over there are different and bad, but from where I sit this is a nasty indulgence. My wife is a caseworker who handles over a thousand families' benefit renewals. It's not a perfect system, but the vast majority of people getting help this way are working poor whose jobs don't pay enough to live on. The fact that so many jobs pay so little is a problem, but that problem is not the fault of food stamp recipients. If you think there aren't food stamp, Medicaid or cash assistant recipients among the membership here, think again.

    Fair enough Jon...
The lack of control applied to those who make indulgent personal (for lack of a better term) choices instead of practical or needful choices, seems to be the main gripe in this thread.
But you're right, too many working folks need real assistance...and I bet the working ones don't shop, act, or think like everyone else:handshake:

There are many people in need. I don't have a problem with that. I'll gladly help those in need. BUT, there are way too many people that are "in need" because they are lazy and have no ambition to make a better life for themselves. That's what I have a problem with.

Yes Jon, you are correct and I believe at least most of the posters here and for that matter most of the members here, as we have seen demonstrated, are always willing to help and would want anyone in need of help to get it. It is the workers of iniquity on the system that does not sit well with most.
