That is the exact reason I left the last company I was with.
We needed 2 people with remodeling experience and both the people they hired had ZERO experience.
Both were nice guys but could not even use a drill or read a tape measure.

Not the sharpest tool in the shed, but the biggest one?

We have a whole slew of "those" types here at my work. Boggles my mind how they ever got hired.....and then I remember equal opportunity.

Who'd have ever thought that EO would trump qualifications and experience? SMH.....

How does one acquire experience? By having experiences.
Gotta' give 'em a chance, but if they can't/don't/won't learn from those experiences, well........time for a taste of reality and a boot.
After a lifetime of experience, I'm right back where I started......without a job, but it's not because I couldn't figure out how to open an umbrella. :picard:

It all comes down to one ? Asked by the employer.
"What are you looking for an hour?"
    Joe Noexperience says $15hr.
JIMBETHYNAME (with 20+ years exp) says "$30hr", guess who gets the job?

You'd probably change that opinion after seeing some of what happens here. :picard:

Once they get their union card, it's hard to get rid of 'em....

All but about 5 years of my working life was spent in union jobs. Trust me, I know how hard that is.
Even when you document over and over and over, it's not easy. I've dealt with a couple of folks like that (actually, I couldn't tell you how many, 'cause there were too many).
One of my pet peeves (remember, I was in a union) was when someone wasn't following procedures and it caused a huge problem, management would talk to workers as a whole, then come up with new procedures to address the issue. 10 new procedures and still the same old problem.....someone not following procedure. In front of fellow workers and bosses, I called 'em on it (more than once). Not one dang thing happened, except another procedure.
Never once did I see the real issue addressed, which was either a lazy sob, or an Id10T screwing something up and no accountability.
There's my opinion, based on MANY years of experience.:headbang:
I'm not a big fan of giving out trophies just because you showed up for work or whatever.
    Ok, rant over.
Now, to go shovel some more snow..................

We are so hard up for workers that even though we aren't union they hire and keep people here just to have a carcass here. I have done the union thing and saw that end too. Some of them I wouldn't trust with a plastic spoon in an outhouse. :picard:

Stupid and or special workers are the bane of my existence. I don't care if you're 10 IQ points above Forrest Gump, if you can accomplish more through working smarter, not harder, I like you.

If the moment you start talking, you stop working, I don't like you.

If a roofing contractor rolls into the lumber yard for 3 skids of shingles, and you look at me like an alien for throwing your "order" of 12 2x4x10's off the forklift forks. And can't understand that it's easier to put 12 boards back on the forklift later, than to hand bomb 150 bundles of shingles, I don't like you.

When you're my swamper on a 30 + town grocery run, and you think poo breaks every 2nd town, or texting or eating lunch once the truck stops moving is a good idea (like what was wrong with the last 30 minutes of sitting in the passenger seat doing nothing for?), I don't like you. In fact, you get fired in 3 days.

Off on a rant haha I feel better now.

Funny that I just saw this post. Today I was thinking about the last guy I laid off for the season. (And how I dont miss him) Good worker, there every day, has some special needs as to kids and wife's schedule but he does a good job and takes pride in his work BUT!, his attitude about life in general totally sucks. I call folks like that emotional vampires. Being around them for to long a time just sucks the sap out of a persons daily motivation some times it seems.

They show up to work, put in the absolute minimum effort to achieve the most half-assed result possible, and believe they are entitled to be handed a paycheck every Friday. And when you finally snap when you've had enough and ream them a new one, you're the butthead?

Been there done that. Got docked on my yearly review once for not having understanding for coworkers below my ability level yet have same manager breathing down my neck why things are taking so long all year long......yep when I got talked to about needing to be a team player again gloves were off and I have not been spoke to about this topic since! Point proven, don't jerk with me, and that is why I work alone a lot now.

Been there and lived through it myself Jim.

I'm currently at the level that I was 20 years ago pay wise. The exception is, there are no benefits; no health, dental, vision, 401K or any type of retirement, stock purchase plan, way less vacation (in the past year I was awarded 3 days), sick days, personal days, etc.

With the profession we are in, (the trades) we either price ourselves out of a job or just get laid off....

Ok, here's what I have to deal with on a regular basis, just happened today. Sorry about the poor picture. Dingbat was running a crawler loader ripping frost. For some reason he got out but left the machine running full throttle. His ratty, ripped up sleeve on his coat caught the hydrostat lever, it took off and threw him off the track. The Cat went up and over a skidloader bucket, a nice Miller portable welder/generator, then a pull behind sprayer. The only thing that stopped it was when she went over the sprayer the bucket gouged into the ground and he was able to crawl back up and throttle it down. All about ten feet away from a high pressure gas line and a couple hundred feet directly lined up with a 250,ooo gallon ethanol tank farm. Only thing the boss said, "We have to be more careful.":headbang:
