You can check with LouseyWeather on that, he is the Authorized Harman Dealer.
Also I know my P61 below is newer than 1998 :)

    Let me clarify
Most of the newer stoves do have the MFD
But many of the older stoves Don't

    From another site
"To really find out the manufacture date, you can contact Harman Warrantee section, or as a dealer to call......Harman will be able to give you the manufacture date. Dealers are fairly used to this, as we have to do it sometimes to ascertain whether the unit is still under warranty or not- most folks don't seem to save, or be able to put their hands on, the original sales receipt..."

The older stoves didn't have a date on them.....sadly, I cant tell you when they started doing that, but its pretty recently. Don't mistake the testing date with the actual manufacturing date, they are two different animals, and can be separated by YEARS.
Maybe they started when HHT took over? cant say that for certain though!
I can state that there are no Harmans out there now which have their electronics covered for more than 2 years. Harman usually goes off install date, if that's unavailable, they go from invoice date to the customer, and, barring that, they go off the manufacturing date of the unit. I am kinda a paperwork nut, I save all my receipts. I suggest you do the same. for some retailers, especially the ones who manually write up things, it could be a HUGE undertaking to find and copy an old receipt, especially when you don't know what year/month you bought the unit......"oh, I think it was a few years ago, in the fall...." wont generally cut it. Would require someone manually going through old invoices......ugh. Where's your old check register? Your charge statement? Probs easier for you to find it than the dealer....unless they are computerized, which most are these days.

Save your receipts, especially for large purchases!

I keep paperwork forever, which sometimes comes in handy.

Had a well known water softener company install a unit in the early 90's (at my old house). About 2010 started having issues with it so called the company (and the same location). They didn't believe me that it was their unit as they couldn't find the paperwork. I finally convinced them to send a tech and he came in to the house without any tools as he was convinced it wasn't one of theirs. Oops, he had to go out and get his kit as soon as he saw their name blazoned on the front of the unit. Then he said that it must have been under someone else's name and that's why they couldn't find it in their system. Then I showed him the original paperwork (with my name and signature on it) and he was astounded. Hey, there are parts on that softener that have lifetime warrantees so I sure the heck was going to keep it!

agreed- good to have a system- I keep my receipts by year, in a waterproof file folder. I can tell you what I paid for gas back in June of 2000......came in really handy for my divorce when my ex claimed her ring was worthless, until I provided the insurance appraisal, back from 1987, when it was appraised at $9k.......I didnt get alot of warm fuzzy moments when I went through that, but that was one!

I would say grab it on one condition ...
That you can remove the baffles and rear cover and snoop around to see if there is any serious rust issues in places that are not easy to fix.

    Good luck

Harman are great stoves for sure but if you are looking to just get into a decent stove on the cheap check out the Castle Serenity. Many have nothing but rave reviews of them. They are not going to run themselves like the newer Harmans but require very little to operate. They sell regular price at right around $900 to $1,000 new but you can catch them on sale at times for $699 - $799.

That would be a much better deal than the old obsolete Harman for $400. Just an idea depending how serious or quick you want a pellet stove. Deals are out there on used also but being prime heating season the cards are stacked against you currently.

Agreed. Best deals will be in late spring-early summer.
