Looking at getting a big saw to do some larger trees but mainly milling. Saw this one pop up and was wondering everyone's thoughts. Its definitely got some wear and tear and its power head only. They want 600 havent had a chance to see it in person or do any inspections of it. So what are your opinions?
it looks more dirty the abused..still got 3 stickers on it... if compression is good and cylinder looks good etc etc seems like a good price.. if it's mechanically ok... trying to guess what he did to handle file chain on it?
I gave 450 for my 066 with a 20in bar and chain in just a little worse visual condition than yours. Unless you can get him at or below 500, I'd keep looking. Jmo, and obviously location plays into the used saw market price. They may simply go for more in your area.
I think he's pretty close on the price, assuming it's in good working condition. The stock oiler on the 660 is pretty stingy though - it'll be fine for felling or bucking, but you'll want more for milling. There is a HO oiler available that came stock with the "R" versions and it's an easy swap.
If he'll go down$50 then that's an extra$50 for a bar and chain, I paid $750 for mine with 24" bar and 3 chains, had maybe 4 gallons of gas run through it, I know because i bought from a good friend.
Call your local stihl dealer and ask him for the cash price of a brand new saw out the door. I think it will be roughly $1,000-$1,100, but who knows since it is Christmas season. $600 seems steep, since it does look to be in rough shape. Like others said, inspect it closely. Find DOM on the sticker below the throttle, pull the cover and look at condition of filter and see if there is a bunch of debris that has bypassed it, compression test, start it cold, run it for a bit, start it warm etc. Some guys will polish and paint these so they look new, and this could be a great saw in disguise also. Let us know how you make out.
I'd be all over it at $500 cause I could still make a little on it for that, but if I were the end user, I'd pay $600 for it.
It's probably not an unreasonable price. Stihl MS660 Magnum Chainsaw 795711187118 | eBay Stihl MS660 Magnum Chainsaw 24" Bar And Chain Nice Saw !!! | eBay I'd offer $500 and see if he counters with anything.
