I went up to my uncles cabin in NY for the rifle opener. The forecast was calling for snow and boy did we get it. We woke to 4" on the ground sunday and it snowed on and off all day. The this morning we woke to 10"+ and 30mph sustained winds with gusts over 50mph. Needless to say we didn't go out this morning so we packed up early and got out of camp while we could. The last few miles of road to camp are not plowed so you can get snowed in real quick. No bucks taken at camp but plenty of doe's seen. Still a great weekend with friends and family! Here's a few pics.
I lasted Sunday until 8:45am. Shot a small buck Saturday, so I don't know why I was out-said to myself I wasn't going to shoot a doe until Thanksgiving.
I sat in the stand all day saturday then till 10am sunday and back out from 1:30 till sunset. I sat on the ground sunday afternoonsunday afternoon due to the conditions. It was no time to be 20 ft up a tree. Congrats on your buck!
The wind was killer on Saturday for our opening of gun deer season. 45 mph gusts, 25 mph sustained wind. That was up north. I sat in the hunting shanty with the drum stove going, had to shed my jacket I got it so toasty. Dad sat in the explorer waiting for a deer. He's disabled so he can do that. Saturday evening dad went into the shanty and after I restoked the fire, I went into my ladder stand. It was still windy. No wildlife movement on Saturday and barely any shots heard. Sunday am I saw a nice doe, but initially passed, noticing she was looking behind her. So I expected a buck. Yeah, there was a buck, but only a spike, so I found the doe in my scope and got her. I've got a buck tag yet so I might go out down here at home. I've got to get firewood, so since I've already got a doe I'm not needing any more.
When it"s mean and windy ya literally have to kickem out of their bedding area. Glad I passed on an invite up around Wapaca - Found a leaking water line by accident so that shot the weekend. That line could have blown at any moment.
