I had posted this picture a while ago and we've got several pictures (videos actually) of him through the fall. Of course I wanted a bigger buck but told my wife if I had a chance I'd go ahead and take him as a mercy shot. Well, this morning he got that mercy shot. It was a bit over 100 yards and he did not go very far at all. Not much meat left on that hind quarter and my hunting is now done because I had only one tag this year. But I still feel okay with this season as it may have been a really tough winter for this guy. He was really having a difficult time trying to get around and he could not chase does either. He would try but just could not run much and what would he have done had he caught one? Could have been interesting for sure. So now I quit hunting early and hope to get an early start on this winter's wood cutting.
Dennis you did a good thing and you got some meat in the freezer , that sounds like a win win to me my Friend
How is the meat? One of my drivers shot one this year that had a bad leg and he ended up throwing it out bacause of the smell. Gary
Gary, we have always put up our own meat but this year we're just not up to it so took it to a fellow not far from here. He called just a bit ago telling me the meat was ready to pick up. We'll get it tomorrow. However, except for backstraps and tenderloin, I told him I wanted it just boned and we'll finish it from there. So we'll know soon how it is and whether to can it or not.
Bo, it has been a long time since I've shot a doe or a small buck. I really wanted something bigger than this one but just could not pass it up after watching him and how he moves. For sure he could no longer breed and I'm actually surprised the coyotes had not got to him yet. So, I put him down. It was a pretty good shot too if I don't mind saying so.
I did the same thing on a little 4 point we saw hobbling around for a few weeks before deer season. It didn't even move when we were sighting in the week before the season! I saw him come across the field at 7:15 am first day-shot him and have never regretted it. Funny thing, we found nothing wrong when we butchered it-no visible injuries.
The right thing to do BS congrats. I don't understand no doe permits in your area? I get two buck tags and at least two doe permits per season. Then again we eat only venison for meat. Have three in the freezer to date.
It is great in our zone they give out 9000 plus doe permits and only about 4000 apply for them then we can buy from the extras. Plus the two buck tags.
Perhaps I misled you. They do give doe permits here and I could get 5 of them. I just do not want them.
