Hello, I am looking into purchasing a pellet stove. The guy at my local Menards said they can be vented right threw the wall, with a wall thimble. From my understanding the vent has to clear the home with a run no shorter than 6 inches. A few of my friends have theirs vented straight out with a varmit and rain proof termination. Is it best as per safety to go up or straight out? We have 1-3 inch stone under the area we would like to exit with our pipe. (People have warned me that they should not vent near bushes) I have watched a few installation videos where people vent straight out.

vwsunshine Welcome to FHC!!! you're in the right place to get some good answers. Pics of the install location will certainly help. I've seen many pellet stoves use the direct vent method... I'm sure some of the pellet burners will be along shortly. Stay warm this winter!!!

Just follow vent instructions to the T, you should be fine. Allow extra clearances for snowdrifts.

Hey vwsunshine! Welcome to FHC :handshake:

As for direct horizontal venting, it can and is done, but some vertical in the exhaust helps the draw, plus helps evacuate the pipe if the power goes out. If the stove instructions show both, then it's up to you. Again, just make sure there's nothing but dirt or stone under it if you go the straight-out method.

I believe that the vent measurement (to end of termination cap) to siding is 12". And perhaps that is what was meant, just want to make sure there is no misunderstanding. Allow for snow drifts (as mentioned earlier). I have to shovel out away from my basement stove's exhaust toward the end of winter because of the berm created by snow dumping off my metal roof. Not a big deal, just need to be cognizant of it. Also, no pipe connections inside the wall.

Make sure to get some CO detectors too.

    Welcome to the forum!

Welcome to the show VW , you are in the right place , plenty of folks here willing to help with real world experience . I like the out and up IMO it's just better than straight out like others have previously stated pic of mine .

Absolutely! And don't forget a solid surge protector....the electronics in these stoves don't like surges/spikes. Let us know if you need some suggestions.

    Hello
One thing about venting straight out or even going out and then up is if you upgrade your stove or get another one the flue pipe will be a differen height so it will be harder to connect.
If you go up and out then changing the stove is easier.
I also like the Selkirk DT with the vacuum cleanout for easy cleaning, only one hole cut in the house and a little better efficiency. IHMO
See one of my DT installs here.
What to do with rusty outside pellet venting? - Inside DT? Yes Siree! | Firewood Hoarders Club

Why go out in the nasty cold weather with pole brushes and clean the venting when you can stay inside and unscrew the vacuum cleanout cap and hook up the vac?

My stove is straight out and I've never had any issues.

Make sure you will have proper clearances from windows, doors, and air intakes before you buy.

    That is good
One of my friends had straight out venting and every time he lost power he got smoke in the house. We just put an outside air kit on the stove that may prevent it next time.
But that would not help on some stoves with outside air intake pipes are open or have an opening inside the back of the stove.

I don't get smoke in the house but you can smell it. It doesn't take me long to get my genny running. I very rarely lose power, though.

out and up.....longer pipe, more money, more pipe to clean
straight out- cheaper, maybe closer to flammable bushes and the ground

Ive measured draft on a power out Harman which went up and out and straight.....no difference....draft drops to 0 in BOTH cases in less than 30 seconds. I cant say I am sold on the out and up argument, especially given the E revision board, which allows you to put an APC 750 on it, senses the power outage and the subsequent square wave of the APC, and pulses the combustion fan to push the smoke out (every couple seconds).......see, you learned something new today about Harmans!

Ditto on the APC 750 - Love that I don't have to worry about my mostly just out (the P43 that has about a 13" rise at an angle), or the P61 (which has 5' of rise at an angle, but hey, for cheap money why chance it?

If both venting set up are allowed, and no hazards prevent you from doing so, I would go straight out.
I have one of each, although different stoves, the straight out venting get much less ash buildup and is much easier to clean. If you are worried about smoke, put your stove on a ups and that will buy you some time to shut it down properly or get the generator going. I have each of mine on a a pure sine wave ups. Power goes out and it's as if nothing happened.

Quick question on that. Does the stove turn back on when utility power goes back on?
