Still going day by day...... make some good progress and then get set back a bit..... The new owners aren't real happy and they have a right to be irritated. The previous project manager lied through his teeth about how far along the project was. All you can do is give it everything you have got if we can meet schedule we should be ok but we have a long way to go and a short time to get there.
Some bugs may be less this summer with areas having colder temps than the norm. That don't include your black flies or our mosquitoes though .
See that's a positive! I will remind you of how nice it was at ten below when you are complaining about the flys this summer.
So far this has been the 12 coldest winter on record. We've had 41 days this season with negative temperatures. And each of the next 5 days will be negative at night. We have over 2 feet of snow on the ground. Zero melting. To cold and to much snow to ice fish. To much snow to get into the woods for cutting. I like winter. I hate summer. I love spring and fall! 43 more days till spring right!
Well, it certainly has been a tough winter, anyway here in Central IL. I am burning about 30% more wood than an average winter. But I can do that.....I have wood, and I am thankful for that. But add to that, that the bad winter also increases my work as an emergency responder. We had a fire a few weeks ago in blizzard conditions, the worst conditions fighting a fire in my 35 year career. All the while my poor wife is home by herself, me running from call to call and trying to keep her in wood and the house warm. She will tend the stove, but prefers that I do that. So, "Is it just me?" No, we all have this winter to deal with, all with our unique problems. Hang in there and be glad that you have the comfort of wood heat. I have come home from many calls this winter and warmed my body and heart and soul in front of my wood stove. What a blessing.
I always get anxious for spring about this time of year and then panic when spring does start to break thinking of all the winter projects I have not gotten done yet!
Bugs are out in the winter too. We saw lots of snow fleas http://www.fcps.edu/islandcreekes/ecology/snow_flea.htm when we were out last Saturday. I also saw another bug walking across the snow. Good thing the winter bugs are not the swarming biting kind.
It sure is nice to go over the 8 hours of daylight mark. That helps more than anything to get thru long winters. For me, 1st part of April is the worst time. Melting snow, mud & goo, standing water, , can't do much outside at all & the days are long & sunny. My greenhouse gets me thru that time.
What do you do when you can't run your bipap? I had to sleep in my recliner for 3 nights, I actually slept pretty good. Cert, make sure you don't slip on the drive with all that ice, then you'll have some real problems.
I love winter. Everything is so crisp and clean. The blanket of snow quiets every noise. I love to look up at the night sky. It looks like black velvet with thousands of diamonds sprinkled about the canvas. Here is a night shot with only the moonlight on a frozen forest.
I sat up in a chair. I couldn't lean back. All our recliners are electric. I didn't get much rest at all. Severe apnea. I now have a couple power packs that will run it without the humidifier for three to four hours. If the power stays off, I now can fire up the generator. Plus I bought a harness to be able to run it off a marine battery. I think I can get a couple nights off that. No more of this freezing and not even being able to lay down. We ran a k1 heater the second night. Kept the house about 50f. We have pets and I didn't want to leave them and the house to freeze. It took us nearly a week to get rested up. We did loose some aquarium fish.
Certified, Glad that ended up alright. Sounds frightening, to say the least. My 1200 foot long very curvy driveway has been glare ice for months, but at least it is level. Have to be careful walking, though. Be careful carrying those groceries.
Simply good to know people like you are out there. Thank you Certified, glad you got through without injury to yourself. A hill and ice, not a good combo. Be careful bud, spring will be here soon.
The high today was 27 degrees but the sun came out in the afternoon and loosened the drive up. I was able to get it bladed off and put more ash down and we are in good shape tonight. What a blessing!
Great news Certified. I spent a couple hours yesterday getting my drive de-iced so on one breaks their neck trying to get the mail. Over night the plow comes by and almost blocks us in. I have to go to the bakery early so no snow moving at 3:30 in the morning. I get home and the neighbor used his plow and totally cleared it away. Things are looking up.
Thanks LP. I have enjoyed every minute of it..... helping people on their worst day has its rewards, especially when we are the only ones that can help them!
