These pictures were taken just a few days apart. It is huge and beautiful growing in among 3 red oak.
Nice, but I wouldn't touch it unless it was on the grocers shelf. I have zero confidence that I could pick out the right ones. With my luck I would end up in a coma from making a bad choice. On the good side of the mushroom story, I had some really good portabella mushrooms today. I cooked them in some olive oil and garlic. dash of salt and pepper. So good on top of the chicken I did the same way.
Yep....chicken of the woods. I picked a trash bag full off 1 tree one time. They are OK. Not great imo. You have to cut the outer edge off and that's all you eat. Tastes pretty "woody".
I'm pretty sure I ran a bunch of that over on the quad. It was sprawled out on all the dead branches. It was an overcast day and the stuff was almost glowing orange. Really neat looking.
It's perfectly safe to eat. Orange on top, yellow underside. Picked them while they are young and fresh, that's when they taste the best. Still nowhere near as good as morels......
Just don't confuse them with jack-o'-lanterns the are also bright orange but grow in bunches and have stems and gills. One way to tell if you have jack-o'-lantern mushrooms is to look at them in a dark place they will glow a blueish green color
When I was a kid I picked some mushrooms that an expert said was good to eat, BUT just touching them I got insanely sick. I have heard that mushrooms on oak stumps are okay to eat, but since getting sick as a kid, it is grocery-only for me.
Why was the Mushroom dating two hot California Blondes at the same time? He was a Fun-Guy (Get it...Fungi)
No those are not the same. It's a rule of thumb to not eat any mushrooms growing on a pine tree. There is a chemical that mushrooms can absorb from pines that can really make people sick.
Well, I don't eat mushrooms unless they're on a pizza from the local bar, so............Good info though. I was just curious, as I found these after being gone for a few days.
