Came across this homemade splitter on Youtube the other day. Maybe someone on here wants to have a go at building it? Personally I'll stick with the maul - this one has me a bit worried about losing my hands, or worse.

I've seen a few versions of these. Has to be one of the fastest splitters, and one of the most dangerous. That's why they're all homemade. Imagine the lawsuits if these were commercially available! This belongs on the hall of nutty inventions along with the one that goes on the car tire while the wheel is spinning off the ground. Real "rocket surgeons" inventing this stuff.

I have been trying to figure out a way to make this safe. The only thing I can think of is to remove the spark plug.

Mmmmmm.... "I'd recommend a kick back guard" ...:picard:.. I personally think you might just need something more than that... He was pretty quick on trying to remove his hands after sliding that block of wood in....:D

He is going to end up getting hurt but you can't fix stupid. One, it needs some sort of clutch; not just constantly spinning around. Yes, we probably could end up engineering a safer version but the cost would go up to where you just go out and buy a good hydraulic splitter. Plus, that thing is only good for easy splitting wood like the pine he was splitting.

The fact that he was throwing the last pieces at it tells you that he knows it is dangerous! And yet they still multiply!:zip:

"Who needs hydraulics?" Probably he will for his lift chair from getting maimed or for a Backhoe to dig his grave. :heidi:

Seen that stupid contraption before. He should at least slow it down but better to throw it out.

Oh, I don't think so! Looks like a great way to lose some fingers.

But wait a minute! Didn't he say it was "hard" pine? :emb: :D

Called the wheel of debt. Cause his medical bills will put him in serious debt, when the maul head flies off and tags him in the chest or head.
