Same here. My wife put cages around ours, and something is still getting to 'em a little bit. We won't get nearly that many. Nice haul, Mitch.
A few blemishes but for not taking care of them I think they are doing pretty good! This was today's haul, my 9 year old picked most of this (mom helped a little) while I was at work. Tomorrow I'll see what else needs picked and maybe get to clean up the garden for the first time in over a month.
Definitely some okra, and a nice summer squash. Just fried one of those up on Saturday. Panko breaded. Yum!
Today's haul, about half basket of tomatoes under the squash and zucchini plus some jalapeƱos. Going to try to find some potatoes under the weeds so I can have taters, onions and okra in corn meal!!
What's everyone's favorite eatting tomato? I planted granny Cantrell, Belarusian heart, Cherokee purple, big boy, better boy, plus a couple others I can't remember of hand. So far despite the neglect taste wise the Cherokee purple and Belarusian heart are tasting great.
The Pink German Johnson is the best tasting tomato I've ever had. Plus the most aggressive growing. Has potato like leaves and is a very prolific producer. They start out a little knarly on the first lower set, but then the second set they are very uniform and very large.
I didn't plant any Mators this year... The neighbor did, so I'm getting a few. But I've always liked the taste of Cherokee Purple. But will have to check out that Mator Mitch Newton
Did you buy plants locally or start them from seed? I'm always looking for a new tomato to try. I usually start from seed, but no garden this year. Next year I'll be ready
Just got my first pickin in. These are my "Steak Sandwich" variety. They are new to me this year. Planted just 4 of them. My "Beefsteak" variety should be ready to start picking within the week. Planted on the same day.
Thread derail alert: Don't know if this goes in the cast iron cooking, what's cooking or this thread but I just tried some baked jalapeƱo stuffed peppers clean the seeds out fill with cream cheese and sausage mix wrap in bacon lightly or heavily oil a cast iron skillet get hot on the stove sear place in oven at 350 for about 20-30 minutes. I also filled up the empty space in the skillet with whole okra just slice the ends off. Okra came out perfect!!! Nice hint of spice from the Jalapanoes and perfect texture!
Then if you pick you can. This makes 11 pints and 7 quarts of salsa along with 20 quarts of spaghetti sauce. Third round here in the pics. Been a good year so far.
Did a little canning last night too. This is my third batch and the wife was using up the zucchini, made a chocolate zucchini cake.
Darn I just found this thread. Posted my maters over here. Gardening | Page 53 | Firewood Hoarders Club
