This tree had been down for at least 5 years. Will the splits dry out faster since it has been dead for that long?

In my limited experience with dead Oak, yes. Just get it split quick, and not too large.

Welcome. I have a Buck model 74 insert and it will heat my entire house with no problems (2200 square feet 2 stories) We love ours. Buck has been around a long time and in my opinion a great company.

I cannot speak to what happens that far south... but according to my limited experience ....live trees (maybe partially) tree cut in January read 15 below are same dryness as a tree cut in summer before and split and stacked for 9 months. because moisture freezes up here most is pushed down too roots and winter wood starts dryer then spring wood... moisture meter verified this but could help some....

There is a member of our group that lives in Nixa. We have done many charity cuts in the Nixa/Ozark area in the past. I went there to help him cut about 6 weeks ago. We have had large GTGs in Carthage in the past.

I am in Muskogee, a little ways from Miami.

Cutting wood up north here in March & April is liking cutting an artery. The sap is running right out as fast as your cutting it. And the logs are so heavy from the water. I like to cut before the end of Feb. if you can get out there depending on snow depth.
