CL find Sthil 066 questions

CAD has struck, current biggest saw is a 029 kinda looking for a bigger saw found a 066 wanting to make sure it's GTG. I'll check compression by hand (no gauge), sprocket, comes with 20" and 36" bar and chain for each, ill check to make sure it idles well bar tiled up and down, chain brake works, I'll call and have the serial number checked to make sure it's not stolen unless owner has receipt. I've never pulled a muffler to check a cylinder but I have a 029 i can practice on if needed. I'll take a large round to make sure it does not fall on its face when in a log. Any thing else I should check and what size socket, wrench, and Allen wrench should I take with me?

T27 will get muffler off. Flex the handle up and down with bar tip on wood (while idling) to check intake boot integrity.

Pull filter and check intake skirt also. Check oiler by keeping tip close to wood and running wot shortly to look for oil spray.

You could pull clutch drum and check integrity of clutch shoes and springs. Overall those are the big ticket items I look at other than cosmetics. Parts are plentiful and relatively inexspensive for these.

It came home with me, idles a little fast but in general looks great!!! I'll post some pictures when I have good lighting, seller said they paid $150 for the 36" Sthil bar they bought for one particular tree and used it one time last year. Other than that they used it for cutting their firewood and preferred to use the 036 and 044.

Is that the 36" bar on your new 066?

 

It looks like a 28", but that's the right bar for it if you ask me - the saw still has nice balance with that bar. 36" will be nose heavy, especially a full weight.

Looks like the 28" is laying on the ground beside it, in the last pic.

 

I think that's the 20". Sorry, did not mean to sound like a know it all or imply the OP got "ripped off" or anything - the price difference between 28 and 36" ES is only $20.

First pic is 28", 2nd is 36". I sold the 36.

 

Your right Shawn looks like a 28" to me, but maybe it's just the picture. Heres a 28" on my 7910.

Owner may not have the receipt , that doesn't mean it's not atolen, they haven't made that saw in what 14+ years? He could be original owner or a second or third owner by now.

Also turn the saw all over and on its side not just tip up and down.

 

Yea that's not a 36" on it. It's probably the 20 and the 029 is wearing a 16"? The nose of the saw would be on the ground if it was a 36. My 650 with a 32" basically rests the tip on the ground as its nose heavy

 

Pulled the cover I t's only a 30" bar not the 36" but that's fine with me I'll use a 30" more than a 36" Fired it up and did a test cut tonight, compression is
enough my shoulder will be telling me about it tomorrow! It cuts really good, I'll clean, lube and finish inspecting it in the next week or so. I most likely will not use this saw until cooler weather unless my neighbor decided to cut down some dead trees. Last storm we had he cut and stacked a little less than a Rick of oak and told me to pick it up when ever I wanted. I dumped it but have not had a chance to split and stack it yet.

My other addiction of turning money into sound and punching holes in paper has been neglected is calling my name tomorrow.

Cleaned it up, she's a bear and a half to start! Had to squirt a little gas and oil in the carb to get her to fire the first time after that no problem, used the Sthil online pdf O manual to set low idle, low speed fuel, high speed fuel. I'm not real happy with the low idle chain bumps along occasionally, I could not go any slower with the idle speed w/o the saw dying. High speed fuel adjustment is dead on per O manual but this saw screams!!! I adjusted the high speed fuel until started smoking and 4 stroking leaned up until she smoothed out. Centrifugal clutch looks like new had a little grease in here I cleaned it up nicely and oiled the needle bearings. Put it in some wood after adjudging everything just to test it, it was all I could do to not load up and go cut up a down oak even though it's 88-91* out last couple days.

Any tricks to make her easier to start cold? Also need to order a few parts for the 021 and some carb kits for lawn mower winter projects for me and the oldest. What online shops does everyone use?

 

What's the compression?

May need a carb rebuild. That's all I can think of.
