Around here there is an organized and funded effort to cut down all the ash trees along roads and near roads in an attempt to stop the ash borer infestation. It's a shame for sure. The company fells the trees, de-limbs and chips up the branches and leaves the trunks.

There are about a dozen large ash on our property that fronts the road or are near the road. The company is even going into one pasture to fell some ash trees. I've spent the weekend starting to section the trunks and hauling them to my processing area. There are ash trees down along a lot of roads here.

At least many of us who burn wood are trying to get as much as we can. It's a shame though.

Somehow I have my doubts that does a bit of good other than you get the ash before it goes bad. Just my gut feeling though.

Most of us here feel the same as you. But several organizations and companies with money must feel like it makes a difference. Who knows???

They tried that in Michigan and wasted a lot of dollars. But it is good for you to get the firewood.

I don't understand the difference between letting a bug "potentially" kill a tree or just flat out killing it with a saw to prevent something that might happen. Shame to lose the trees but around here there are dead ash trees everywhere. Literally thousands upon thousands, so I guess it's just a matter of time anyway. Might as well take advantage of something you can't change.

I saw a lot of dead ash driving through Ohio and PA a couple times recently. Not as much damage north of the NY line though. And it wasnt quite as bad in PA as Ohio.

I'd be worried about transport distance too - hopefully the wood is not travelling far if its infested.

They should do that around here I see a lot of dead ash right by the road just waiting, for a puff of wind, to fall and Crush some one's car driving down the road

You know after I have read this a time or two, just think about the logic here. Stuff along the roads, do the emerald borers arrive on buses like migrant workers so the stuff along the roads need cut down.

Not at all but the stuff along the roads can fall into the roads if you leave it standing dead long enough. Sooner or later it must be dealt with. Trees 100 feet back from the road will never fall on a car so they can be left.

I would have welcomed the opportunity to finally meet you and the ornery one!

Thing is, I don't do pics/facebook or any revealing info about myself/us. (damm those wanted posters!) It's bad enough that pics I have posted are now on the WWW. I prefer to try to maintain some type of anonymity as much as I can.
99 still can't believe that I participate in a forum to this day!

Fella on my way to work levelled a 4 acre or so woods last week. It's all but ready to plant now. Hurt me every time I drive by to see piles of timber 50 fit across going up in smoke. At least he saved the biggest logs.
