I watched a neighbor Block up a 48" white oak with a Poulan wildthing with an 18" bar. I eveneed offered to cut it up. I wanted a big testing log while I was learning to rebuild the carb on the 056 super. I even have a 36" bar but he us a stubborn type. Glad your getting it taken care of. Any updates?
I've been cutting a tank of gas worth each day for the last three days ... this is the pace that seems best for me in this hot weather. Almost have all the wood from the left side of the main trunk. We finally got a big rain last night; will need this to drain off before processing the wood on the right side of the trunk. The rounds are piling up nicely. Going to be cooler tomorrow, may go for two tanks worth of cutting.
Progress Update: All of the limbs and top have been cut and hauled next to my stacks for processing. Now the fun begins! I start working on the four 5 foot trunk sections tomorrow.

Cut up the two easiest trunk pieces this morning; fortunately the trunk was already split and I was able to pull it apart using the cant hook. Finishing the cuts is difficult on such large pieces and you can see my cuts don't line up very nicely. I am surprised how well it is going so far ... I wasn't confident I could get it all ... but it just might happen. A little sledge/wedge work and it should be ready for the SS.
Nice work. Its amazing what can be done with an 18 inch bar. You may have mentioned it earlier in the thread but do you have an idea as to how much cordage you will get out of this behemoth?
No idea at this point. I have lost track of how many cart loads I have brought up near my stacks. Doing a quick calculation on the trunk section shows it to be over a cord by itself (~ 160 cf ). I will likely create a new row of pallets just for this tree, so I will have an accurate number when it is all done.
Either way it looks like a good amount of wood. The gas mileage on your truck is perfect as well!! Im sure you'll show a picture of it all c,s,s. Ive never been around oak but I know from the btu charts its fairly dense so Im sure the wood is very heavy at this stage.
It does not matter a bit if those cuts don't line up perfect. Remember, you are not cutting for a sawmill. You are cutting for firewood.
Keep at it, your saw will get the job done. Some of my Cuts don't line up perfectly cutting the big stuff with a 20 inch bar either, but like said it's just firewood.
