HarvestMan, did the Road commission give you that diameter or did you tape the circumference/Pi=40" ? Just wondering out loud is all.....
For sure! In the last year I have learned the reasonable limit for the SS and a 40 inch round is way over that limit. A 16 inch long round near the base would likely be several hundred pounds; noodling into quarters would be much better. Perhaps my bad shoulder is healed sufficiently to split it will maul/wedge or my x27 ... not sure I'm wanting to risk re-injuring it at this point.
I put a string around it about 3 feet up, measured the string and did the back calculation. String length was 126 inches which yields 40.10708 using this online calculator: Diameter Calculator

Yep, mostly concerned about the first 20 feet of the main trunk. The road commission forester who came out said they would cut it into 10 foot sections - I asked about cutting the base into 16 inch rounds and he said they would not, but perhaps he thought I wanted the whole tree cut up. I guess I'll find out soon enough; btw, I did find a 20 inch bar and chain combo on amazon for about $40 ... might get that if they don't want to cut up some of the main trunk.
Update: today is the tree cutting day ... just slightly beyond the timeframe the road commission gave me. I asked the tree service guys if they would cut up some of the base. They said no but that it would be in 4 foot sections as it was easier of the loader that hauls the wood away some time in the future. Once it is down I will ask how much cash would be required to cut up some of the base pieces. First pic, more to come later ...
I had to step away from the show ... couldn't take watching them chip up limbs that I would have used for firewood.

These guys are crazy busy and could not be bought; asked them to name a cash price but was rejected - they needed to get to the next job. They give the wood chips to a local mulch company and only dump the truck at end of day, so no go there (didn't really need the mulch - so I did not push it). After looking at the base, there is lots of rot ... so glad I didn't pay to have it cut up. I'm going to focus on the limbs first and then go for the trunk if time permits. The road commission will come by at some time to pick up any unprocessed wood ... hope there is not much for them, but likely some of that base will remain. Here are additional pictures. Time to get out the 029 Super and get busy. Could use some of their equipment. The green paint on the stump was for "oak wilt" protection.
There's lots of good wood left in that tree. I feel confident you'll be able to get most of it with your 029......
Where in pontiac area are you i drive down dixie hwy to us24 into livonia 3 days a week have a husky 455 rancher with a 20" bar and can help cut if needed or you can just use the saw
Thanks for all the offers of help and of course the encouraging words! I'm just a bit stubborn and will give it a go with the 029 and see how it goes. I started cutting after the tree guys left but only managed to cut a tank of gas worth (it was around 86 ... way too hot for my tastes). The road commission forester came by while I was cutting and he said the crew that hauls the wood away is way behind; he thought I should have plenty of time to cut up what I want (his first forecast was way off - hoping he is right about this one). He said they have quite a few problems with people taking wood like this without getting the homeowner permission. I put out a couple signs to discourage this, but the best thing for me to do is cut some each day until it is gone. Will post a few more pictures as I make progress.
Good idea on the signs! I learned the hard way don't cut more rounds than you can take at a time. I have come back to find someone else helped themselves to the rounds I cut!
Won't be much left, if any at all, when you get done with that. Should have put, private property, on that sign
If you need to hustle, don't buck rounds, buck them as long as you can lift them. Throw them in the truck or trailer and buck them later. That gets all the easy pickens off the road and ready for you later at your convenience. Then again, this all means nothing if those are 12" limbs and my eyes aren't adjusting to the pics.
