In my spare time (yeah right ) over the past 6-7 weeks I've been doing a lot of work in backyard. First starting in early April moved about 4-5 tons of logs, blocks & slabs to parents acreage.Took 6 trips lots of sweat & planning. Wanted the area clear for a new 8 x 8 shed to go in that space.Placed the order for the custom built shed on April 26th,was told its normally 3-4 weeks lead time unless they get super busy. You choose the size, paint colors for outside walls/steel roof, doors & trim.No windows for me,though they are an option also. Using mostly Indiana Limestone & a couple precast concrete slabs from my 20+ year old stash 2 weeks ago started setting the foundation pads.Underneath 3-4 inches of recently scattered wood shavings for a firm base there's a little dirt & then 5-6 inches of compacted large river rock which I placed there in early 90's.About 6-7 tons worth if I remember. Finally last Saturday 5/21 all the pads were set (was a bit of a challenge since there was at least 4 different thicknesses of the pieces - from 2.25 to 3.25" thick, with the sizes being roughly 10 x 12 to 18" or so square. But eventually everything was the same height & level in all directions To keep the pads secure & not shifting when the shed was slid off that trailer I drilled holes for 1/2" & 5/8" leftover threaded rod & rebar then the pins driven through into the ground.Pads stacked 2 high for extra support. In a few weeks will use a couple more pieces of that salvaged limestone & granite to build some steps next to doors of new shed.Roughly 3 foot wide & 14-18" deep. Wanted the new shed for lawn/garden stuff, miscellaneous & the old shed was to be for saws, bars, chains, all other wood cutting gear ONLY. Thursday afternoon the shed was delivered & set into place. Friday afternoon after work started moving EVERYTHING from old shed, throwing away some unneeded junk, anything non saw related was put into new shed. After that started building shelves from salvaged 2 x 12 doug fir (steel shelf standards/brackets were given to me by former neighbor in Jan 2015) moved a 2'x2'x6' tall cabinet given to me by employer earlier in the week plus a Craigslist find 1950's doug fir workbench I'd been saving since April 2014 inside. Worked until after dark Friday night, then was back at it at 630 AM yesterday morningWorked until dark again,am about 90% done with what I want now, will put the finishing touches (couple more short 2 x 12 shelves in SE corner, hang a 4' fluorescent light fixture over the bench + couple other things in the next days/weeks.) Am tired now....lol The following pics show the progression of the project. Wanted to use the old shed for saws etc ONLY cause it already had a dirty stained plywood floor & inside smelled like gas/oil already somewhat.
Nice post! Buy it cheaper than you could build it? You are in construction I know. Usually you can though. That's why I bought a metal carport to store my wood in. It was cheaper than I could even buy the materials for for just a slant roof shed.
I checked around first -would've saved no more than $300 by buying all the materials, bringing it home,building/painting it etc. Just didn't have the time for that with everything else going on this year....Wouldve taken me 2 months in spare time putting it together, plus on days that it rained would have to cover all the lumber etc with a tarp when not building it. Space is very limited here as it is.
Worked a little more this morning - everything finished inside the saw shop now except for hanging a 4 ft light fixture (got a used commercial one free thanks to an electrician doing some clearing out of his company trailer on a job last January ) - already has a 4-5 foot cord with plug attached just need to anchor it to rafters & install the 2 bulbs. Not doing a damm thing the rest of the day now except drinking a few beers & grilling a ribeye steak later this afternoon..... 1 sister, her 2 kids,2 grandkids & spouses are stopping by a bit later. She was grilling out also, wanted me to bring my food over there (less than 2 miles from my SE) but I said 'sorry I'm too tired to go anywhere now'.So they're gonna do their thing then stop by in a couple hours.
Always wondered what stuff looked like when they had their own shelf to live on... ........ nice job thistle ...
Really nice setup man, I bet it sure is nice to have everything organized real nice like that I have wood I have to move around in the back from place to place not really looking forward to it
Nice work thistle! Looks great. Getting organized is a great feeling - just wish it lasted longer! I try to make an annual ritual of it, at least.
That 4 foot double light I had was too big for this area overhead. It'll go in the new shed eventually.Remembered this 18" mini one found in a junked cabinet at curbside last summer.Just extension cord about 75' from garage/shop now,but will do a more permanent hookup in the future. 830PM last night, almost dark here - that lights up this whole space quite nicely.
Looking good brother! Now you can come spend a week here at my place and organize my nightmare-of-a-workshop!! I know your collection of saws/memorabilia pretty well, nice to see it displayed neatly on those shelves!
Put on my stone mason's hat Sunday morning -used some more of those scrap pieces of limestone & granite. Though it looks narrow, the steps are a minimum 32" wide & 10" deep at top. Will be plenty for my small push mower. Not quite 12" from ground to floor of shed,so needed a lower rise than most steps, still too high to go without. Used what I had, didnt have anything longer than 42"-43".This stuff isn't light - biggest pieces here are 100 pounds plus. Have a couple real nice 1.5" polished black granite slabs & more limestone - 24" x 36" minimum, some pieces up to 30" wide,3" thick,40" long, but didn't want to rip them down into narrow strips. Those largest pieces will be used whole for something special some day.Had to dig though the stacks til I found something smaller that was suitable.
