Quick question for all the Stihl fans and techs out there. I have an older 044 that I am putting back together for a fellow hoarder after a felling mishap. No personal injury's, only the rear handle/tank assembly smashed off. He is 80 and a very capable wood cutter, but starting this saw wears him out quick. My question is, during the rebuild can I swap out the cylinder for one with decompression valve and drill the top plastic to accommodate it? Any ideas would be appreciated.
The stihl produce the 044 with decomp valve cylinder of a little , i am not 100 sure but i think that the 440 cylinder will fit to the 044 case , 440 is with decomp valve
That's great. Thanks for all the information. I'll post some pictures of the transformation once I get into it.
I think the decomp cylinders only became available after they switched to a 12mm wrist pin on the later 044's. If you're working on a 10mm saw, a newer 12mm cylinder will bolt right on but you'll have to check the locations of the piston ring-locating pins relative to the intake and transfer ports. My understanding is that some 12mm cylinders don't play well with 10mm pistons.
I dont know .......... i just say ........ create a area-place for install a decomp to the old 044 cylinder , using TIG welder fill with aluminum the fins of the cylinder and then machine work for put the decomp valve maybe cant be done maybe can be ................. i will try some day
Easy enough to drill and tap a center one in the existing cylinder. It will look a little redneck in the cover but it will be cheaper.
