My son has opened up a lot of area. I hope he can keep up with it. Ive been thinking about a walk behind trimmer like this one from Tractor Supply. Any thoughts?

My father in law had one... I tried it... Way easier to use a regular trimmer in my opinion.. He thought you could just use it like a push mower...

Agree with Nitrodave ....just get a good handheld string trimmer and I think you will be better off

had one hated it. got an old powered brush hog... think lawnmower with a blade 2 times as thick much better at keeping area open. assuming area was overgrown and not ready for mower yet.. do you want it woodsy or lawn what's the goal?

My thoughts echo the others here. They are somewhat limited in their practical application. They are cheaper than a good pro-grade hand-held trimmer but that's it. A hand-held is much more versatile.

If it's not important to keep it as finished lawn, hire a local to brush hog it 1-2 times a year.

At work we are using a three blade plastic arm cutter head with metal edges on a Husqvarna trimmer. I have cleared a lot of bamboo and small brush. It works real quick. It is not for saplings, but new growth and light brush it works well. Each cutter arm can be replaced. It is easy to change back to a string head. It looks like this:

or a Harley rake.... then seed it and be treat it like lawn.. where I was headed... savemoney mentioned some health problems so a weed Wacker might be a lot on an acre..

Also where I am brush hogs get 65 an acre Harley rakes are close to same makes no sense but that's what they charge

I hadn't considered a rental brush hog. I'll keep that in mind.

I keep all my "rough" areas maintained with a bush hog and a Stihl 250 trimmer. A walk behind trimmer would do me no good-the areas are either too steep or too big for one of them.
I have used a walk behind, but it is more exhausting to push one of them than strapping the trimmer on and using it.
