Spring may actually be here in my neck of the woods here in podunk Iowa. About and around this time of year depending on the weather I come home at night and take a walk down the 2 rows of asparagus we have in the garden. Cigarette in 1 hand and beer in the other walking slowly and carefully looking down at the ground. It is a short and slow journey to walk to the 2-70 foot rows of asparagus that are 300 feet from the house but even slower to walk down the rows looking for the first signs of growth. Tonight I made the same walk as I have done for at least a week or so and the same walk I have made for years in the past looking for the first signs of spring in our garden. I was in a particularly bad mood when I got home tonight but after my "gus" walk my mind was uplifted some by the sight of the first small little sprout of something that makes my pee smell funny and has emerged from roots that were planted 12 inches under the ground many years ago. Many folks get all excited about a new truck or a trinket that has some glimmer or shine to it but I guess the 1 thing that lifts my spirits after a long cold winters nap is the signs that life goes on. When i was much, much younger other things tripped my light fantastic but nowadazs the sight of a vegetable emerging from the soil seems to be just as satisfying as any other experience I have encountered. I cant remember when it went from 1%er biker to this but it sure is a lot less stressful watching the garden grow.
That is an uplifting sight, Butcher..... And a welcome one at that I pick wild asparagus along the fence rows out in the country here, and yeah the paypay stanks pretty strong!!!
Last nite I heard the nitetime "peepers". Heard them last week for 1 nite but it got cold again. Heres to hearing them every nite for a few months (hopefully).
Like your story. As we get older, I think we appreciate more the days that are allowed us and some of the little things they bring.
