I think that speaks more to how poorly your US Stove was made.

I have two top feed stoves. And only have to touch them when the ash pan is full. And I burn almost 6 tons a year.
Same can be said for a couple of friends that have Castilles.

Harmans are nice, but I am not convinced that bottom feed is superior to other methods.

There are great top feeder stoves out there , and some Chit ones also but the bottom feeders haven't heard to many negatives about them :D

When I hear non Harman owners on here talking about setting the trim, draft, feed rates, opening gates, etc. I laugh. I set the temp for 72, grab a beer and relax.

The one nice thing about my bottom feeder is the pot is almost level...

It's a positive thing, in pushing ash over and not laying in the bottom of the Harman pot. But a negative thing because there is no angle, lots of little unburnt pellets get thrown out because of all the air through the pot.

Bottom feeds are nice.. But a good quality top feed? Burns without needing to touch the pot at all. With a good enough burn they eject the ash and stay cleaner longer than bottom feeds (when ran for extended periods without touching them).

My Enerzone pushes the ash forward when relighting because it's such a level pot.. (1st pic is after a couple days burn. So not much ash is left due to the high amount of air from the two combustion blowers). I loved my Quadrafire top feed. But love this bottom feed stove.

Although, I wouldn't hesitate to run some of the newer top feeds that are out there. Especially the Italian models! They look good and burn good!!

fact is though, the Harman WILL burn crappy pellets. Some stoves simply wont.

well, even with Harmans, its pretty key to get the draft set correctly. A lot of folks never do, and its fine, but every once and awhile you get someone who cant figure out why their unit wont run, but have no idear what the draft is.....get out there, throw a meter on it....no draft......wonder why it isn't running.......
