Last time we checked a couple of weeks ago, only one of four hives was still alive :headbang:

I'm planning on getting back into it this summer. I lost both of my hives in the winter of 2014/2015. I've been way to busy with work and school to even think about getting back into it until this summer so hopefully everything will work out right and I can get some ladies buzzing around in my backyard again.

Mine have been real active on several days this winter. It's rough on them to be out flying with nothing but maple sap to haul back home though...

Not trying to derail your thread. I was noodling yesterday and couldn't get over how many bee's were around. I know little at all about bee's, but I assumed the couple warm days here got them more active. There were hundreds of 'em. I imagine this early in the year they'll take what they can get.
coal reaper, I'm allergic to bee stings. Get that little fella off your face! LOL

Beekeeping has caught my attention after reading these bee threads over the past year, I don't know much about it, but sounds fun and rewarding, and would tie in well with my other hobbies. Seems like it may require a bit of time to tend this enterprise, but I may be wrong. Extra time is something I just don't have right now.:(

It does takes a little time to get started, but after that, it is not much. The bees mostly take care of yourselves.

They always like to be checking out the smell of fresh wood. Especially black birch. The love drinking the puddles in my processing area. Its like splitter driblings tea for them!

Yesterday was first flying since christmas and they were bringing pollen in that day too. Today they were coming with full baskets and dusty heads.

Anyone ever done a top bar hive? Warre or Kenyan? Supposed to be healthier for the bees. (?)

I have around 7 Kenyan Top Bar hives. I don't know about them being any more natural, but the bees sure do seem to like them, and so do I :)

The lady up the street from me runs a couple top bar hives one is modified to fit langstroth frames. They seem to work pretty good I have a book on them and would like to try it out one day.
