So, today I used my buddy's ms460 with a 20" bar and full chisel lgx i think chsin for woodcutting. It's definitely got more power than my 029 super. It weighs a little more too, but it's not unbearable. I use the atv to get me to where I need to go, and the saw fits on the rack, so that's not a big deal. By putting the RS yellow stihl chain on my 029super it really did help with cutting speed. I still have yet to MM it, and its been in constant use since it was new in 99. It's been an awesome saw, stone reliable. Gas oil and go. For a non pro, but farm saw, it's been amazing. I still have yet to test its compression, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's getting to the point of needing a rebuild. If it does, I'll big bore it. Do I still want a near 80 cc or more saw? Sure, why not. Here's the saw. Here's my work. Dead standing beech, 30% MC tested with my ryobi MM. It fell nice and clean, the trunk jumped away from the stump when I fell it directly on the closer stump. No biggie, I expect stuff like that. All bucked up. Load 1. 5 loads fills the trailer full as you'll see later. This is the dead elm I dropped last weekend. Load 2. 13 minutes after load 1. all beech Load 3. 15 minutes after load 2. Beech
Very nice Horkn looks like a good haul. Those MS 460's are nice saws. If you got one you will not be disappointed. I like the sled also. I never get tired of falling a tree no matter how many times I do it. I get a little bit of a rush from it. I go to the mountains in the summer and will fall from 25 to 30 trees all beetle kill.
Continued... Load 4. Oops, forgot to take a pic. All ironwood, it was dead standing. I dropped it last winter. Load 5, sugar maple. With ironwood. Here's the loaded trailer. I split a little of this and took a good face cord home to stack. I'm getting a nice sized pile at my buddies house. More to get from the woods. I'll be cutting and hauling until about memorial day. That's like 16 weeks away. Each load is over a half cord all done by myself in a couple hours, if I can get out at least 1 day a weekend (average). Some weekends I'll do 2 days worth, some days I'll have help so I can get a lot more in a day. Today was a baseline. Just me, and the bayou.
I cut a lot last year in the snow like that. It give the legs a little more of a workout. This year I haven't been out much but no snow when I did. I've still hauled in more than I'll burn this year so I'll be setting at an easy 5 years ahead. I like me some beech.
It looks like we'll get a little more about this week, but nothing crazy. I'm thinking of going up north to go snowmobiling next weekend. So, getting out tomorrow before the Superbowl will be good.
Getting the wood out of the woods and to the trailer is pretty easy. At least while there is snow it is. After I get it out of the woods, I take the load over to my buddy's house where his splitter is. That's only about 3 miles away by car. I unload rounds there, split, then haul the trailer to my house 25 minutes away to stack. There's a bit of extra handling this way, but the wood is free since it's on my parents empty lots. I'll need to get a smaller trailer to haul behind the quad when the snow melts. My parents have a perfect one up north, it just needs sides, and to get the 200 miles from the cottage to my buddy's house.
Nice bit of work. Snow, what's that? We have not had any this year. Cut today in a shirt and worked up a sweat.
Snow is on the way. It is hitting us here today with temperatures dropping into the teens and staying below freezing for a week. It was shirt sleeve weather here on Saturday.
